My name is Nikki and I have been feeding a raw diet to my ferrets for about 20 years. I am very holistic minded with ferret care - raw feeding, no vaccines and little cage time. I hope to complete a walk in outdoor pen for my crew this year, so they can enjoy some fresh air
I have owned ferrets since 93, breed the occasionally raw fed litter, take in the occasional rescue (although half end up staying here of course ) and have all around enjoyed having ferrets. My current crew includes:
Morgan an 8 year old PVF silver roaned to white girl. I switched her to raw at 8 weeks, never gave her another vaccine and other than developing adrenal last years she is in great health for her age.
Ophelia is a nearly 3 year old MF silver blaze girl. She was at the petstore for about 6 months when I was able to buy her for $7.00. I had her switched to raw within a month, never vaccinated her but at about a year old she became adrenal.
Foster is a 4-5 year old sable girl who was supposed to be a foster. She developed adrenal before I could place her and since she was so easy for everyone to get along with, I just kept her. It took me about a month to switch her from Kaytee to raw and she has an unknown vaccine history prior to me getting her. Her, Morgan and Ophelia are part of an adrenal treatment research program.
Nigel is a two year old dark sable intact boy from a private breeder. He is one of the best ferrets I have ever owned - very smart and very people oriented. He has been raw fed from about 7 weeks, never vaccinated and from an all dark/black sable background. I had given up the thought of breeding ferrets until I got Nigel but he was such a nice boy that I decided to give it another try.
Octavia is a two year old black sable girl and was bought to be Nigel's girlfriend. She is a good match for him in intelligence and looks. She has never been vaccinated, has been raw fed since 5 months old and is also from an all dark/black sable pedigree. She currently has a litter out of O'Possom that is 5 weeks old.
OtterB is a year old dark sable daughter of Nigel and Octavia. She is a nice little girl and is second generation raw fed/non-vax'd/all sable background kit. My purpose for breeding is a bit different from most ferret breeders. I aim breeding for natural ferrets - color, structure, diet and care. Although I also would like to have a line of naturally reared dilutes, which brings us to:
O'Possom is a nearly year old champange intact boy. He is a big guy and very handsome. I chose him for the foundation of a dilute line because he is sturdy, has no blaze/panda/mitts in his pedigree and has an outgoing personality. I brought him home at about 12 weeks of age and he has been raw fed ever since and has never been vaccinated.
Apple is a two year old cinnamon girl who I brought home at the same time as Octavia. She was easily switched to raw food and has never been vaccinated. She was very mothering towards Octavia's kits last year and kept stealing them for herself when they were introduced into the general population.
