Free Roam & Ferret Proofing

One of my biggest fears about letting my ferrets free roam (when I'm not there) is them getting into something I missed while ferret proofing. I'm sure there are others who feel the same way.

Anyone have hints and tips on ferret proofing a house or a room to make it as safe as possible for your fuzzbutts?

Well I personally wouldn't reccomend letting them have free roam of the whole HOUSE when you arent there, but if you want to let them free roam in a smaller room (when you arent around) I think that would be a good idea.

Here is how I would ferret proof:

1. Pick up anything and everything thats on the floor. All pens, pieces of paper, do-dads, and thingy-ma-bobs (lol!)

2. When you arent in the room I would reccomend unplugging all electrical cords, wrapping them up and putting them up out of reach.

3. Once you have picked all the stuff up of the floor and unplugged all eletrical cords, vacuum or sweep the area (this will pick up any little tidbits you might have missed, such as bits of plastic, or rubber, or anything else your fert might get into trouble with.

4. Now get on your belly and crawl around (no, Im not kidding). Do you see any holes? Any nooks and crannies that they could get into? If so, plug em up!

5. They can't get to the windows, can they? If they can, NEVER leave the windows upon when you arent there (even if there is a screen, they might crawl through it!)

6. Make sure you have plenty of toys to keep them occupied! A bored ferret WILL go looking for trouble.

7. Periodically check the room to make sure that a.) they didnt find any spots they can get into and b.) that nothing is on the floor that they could get into

Im sure I probabably missed a few things, maybe someone else can chime in and help me out.

Also wanted to add that having a playpen is a sure-fire way to keep them safe when they are out of the cage when you arent around. Its a good option if you dont want to cage them when you arent home.
