I started a rat colony for my three darling ferrets: Mocha, Oreo ,and Mooshake.
I started with one male and one female. They had their first litter on 4/20/09. The litter had 15 babies, but one did not make it. The mom is taking excellent care of her babies.
i fed him or her to Mooshake who devoured the baby in two seconds.

The little ones do have a tendency to be delicacies and are eaten quickly. Congratulations on your feeder colony and Mooshake's ratty meal. Was this her first? ciao

yes it was ! Unfortunately all the babies died along with mom in the first week of May. At first i thought they were too cold, with the ac on in the room, but now i beleive they all died because mom got injured and stoped producing milk.
I even tried to keep the last three alive by feeding them kmr with an eye dropper every couple hours.,but in the end it was a waste of time. Mocha and Mooshake ate all the little babies. Oreo completely didn't under stand that they were food.

I'm sorry that you lost all your little ones Not a good start on the breeding programme. Poor Oreo....he will get the idea in the end. Captain Jack has finally figured out they're for eating not cuddling so there is hope He's even managed a couple of kills, so there is hope. You could try posting as to what may have gone wrong with your litter....I'm under the understanding that rats are a little more tempermental to breed than mice (I've heard this I don't honestly know as I only breed the mice). Just an idea ciao
