We took De to the vet yesterday and she got a BG test. Vet said it was kind of low (90) but we werent sure when she ate last so we will have to take another one. We want to make sure she is not insulinomic before we start to fast her in an attempt to get her on more natural foods.
Then Dr. Weltig also looked her over and said for an 8 year old adrenal, she looked pretty good. He said that the Lurpon he ordered should be in within 2-3 days and it will cost $100 (including office visit) for the 30 day depot. He said if De doesnt respond to the one shot of lupron per month, the most we can give her is 1 shot every two weeks. He said hopefully her adrenal isnt so bad that we'll have to do that, but we'll see.
In 2-3 days when she goes in for her lupron, Dr. Weltig will hold her for the day and test her BG. Samson will also have his BG tested at this time. If all goes well, the kiddos will start the switch to more natural foods this week. De will be switching to ground raw foods (with the occasionally liquified mouse ) and samson will be switching to whole prey.
Samsons teeth look HORRIBLE. I plan to take pics of them before he goes on the whole prey, and after. I hope to see a difference in his teeth. The vet is anxious/excited to see how things go as well. If the prey doesnt clean his teeth good enough, he will have to go in for scaling and polishing. I dont want to put him under for that, so fingers crossed. His teeth are pretty bad, I've seen natural diet make a difference in teeth before, but I've never had a ferret with teeth this bad. I hope it works!
Dr. Weltig was talking to us about how when De stops resonding to the Lupron what it will look like when she starts to "go". It was upsetting to talk about, but I am glad he was honest and let us know exactly what would be happening in De's body. and how to tell when it is time to "help her cross the bridge".
Dr. Weltig said that its a shame De wasnt on a natural diet sooner (me and my ex got her a year ago when she was 7). He said our other natural fed ferrets are "gorgeous" and sooooo healthy. It really made me smile to hear an allopathic vet telling me this
So thats all for now. Dr. Weltig is an allopathic vet, not an integrative or holistic vet, so I couldnt get any info from him regarding natural ways to manage adrenal symptoms in females. Jojodancer, do you think you could ask YOUR vet what he thinks?
Over and out!
