Ok hubby and I went away for the weekend with the kids (we went to the beach but instead of comming home every night we stayed in a hotel 2 hours away) my mom ferret sat and when i came home last night i find Tigger looking all dehydrated and on deaths door. We have been in the house 5 mins when Hubby and i go running with tigger to the 24 hour vets. they look at him and are not sure what is wrong but put him on iv fluids. they call our reqular vet who tells them that he will pick him up in the morning unless they think that he needs to come out to see him so they tell him that they think tigger will be fine till the morning but would call him if anything happened. Well at 8 this morning my vet called me to tell me that he had Tigger in his office and that he had taken him of the iv fluids so he could see if he stayed hydrated or not. also that he was running some blood tests and checking some other things. He just called me at about 10:30 and said that the blood tests that he could do in if office were all ok and that tigger was staying hydrated on his own and that he had eaten one of the baby chicks that i send with him. and that if he stays hydrated he would send him home tonight. My problem is with my mom we were 2 hours away and I talkd to her on sat night all she had to do was tell me that there was a problem and we would have been home sat night. my biggest problem is that i am supposed to go camping for two weeks at the end of june but no i dont know--my older dog lady wont let anyone in the house that she does not know and i cant take the ferrets camping, i hate to cancelle my vaction but i am not sure if i trust my mom to watch them for two weeks now, Ok thanks all for letting me vent

Sorry to hear that jasmine. Are there any places or vet services where you can take your ferrets to be looked after?

i have a little over 2 weeks so i was thinking about maybe finding a pet sitter that can come out to the house a few times over the next couple of weeks so that Lady can get to know her/him.

That frustrating! At least you have a little time to try and find other options! Hope you find someone that works out!

Sorry to hear that jasmine. Are there any places or vet services where you can take your ferrets to be looked after? First off, that sucks, Jasmine. I'm really sorry I hope you are able to work something out so that you can go on vay-cay, but with the peace of mind knowing that your ferts will be okay. Meli, its really tough trying to find a good ferret sitter. Its even harder when you have alot of ferrets and its harder still when said ferrets are on a natural diet. A good ferret sitter (and vet) are worth their weights in gold lol! I am going to Hawaii in August (right before the HF website opens) and my mom will watch my ferts (and cat). She wont feed whole prey but she will feed them raw. Oh well, its better then kibble. I trust my mom but I will still worry, especially with being so far away.

UPDATE: Tigger came home last night looking like himself and is still fine this morning. The vet is not sure what is wrong with him but thinks he may just have stopped eating and drinking while we were gone. I dont know we are keeping a close eye on him. While i was at the vet one of the girls that works there overheard me talking to my husband about our vacation and she offered to sit for us since she lives close to us(she was looking at our address since we were paying lol) she is comming over to meet Lady but knows her since all of our animals go there. She knows that we feed raw and whole prey and she has a snake so thats not a problem there. Also she will be comming over every weekend until we leave so that she gets the rhythem down as long as lady likes her. Im not holding my breath just in case

Great news! Glad to hear Tigger seems just fine and that you seem to have found someone to keep an eye on the critters!

Ahh, I get it now the dog's NAME is "Lady". WHen I first read the post I interpreted it as my OLDER "dog lady" ( as in live in pet sitter) won't let strangers in the house - and I'm thinking why not just introduce the "Dog lady" to your mom?
Duhhh... Sometimes that Evelyn Wood speed reading course ain't all its cracked up to be!
If your Mom gets along with the dog- why not ship the dog to your Mom's house so the vet's helper can enter your house to ferret care with no problems?
Hope you can get it squared away! Me- I've just come to realize if my kids can't go with me, I can't go anywhere.

LOL thats funny--My mom cant have dogs at her apartment. But we had our first meeting last night. She called and asked if she could come over and Lady did let her in the house without any problems so as of right now we are ok. I did talk to my step-daughter and she said if need be she will take Lady while we are gone. So we seem to have the problem taken care of. Thank you all for your support.

So glad to hear Tigger is okay:) My hubby and I have the same problem - not being able to get away with 7 furkids at home. My dad was the only 1 I've ever had check in on my ferrets and since he passed away in January, it doesn't look like we're going anywhere in the near future. My step-mom does like ferrets and thinks they make my home smell:( She just doesn't understand.
Glad to hear it sounds like you've found a solution!

I am glad it all worked out ok! I also know the frustrations of finding someone to watch them. With 3 dogs, 7 ferrets & a cat, we don't go on vacations much anymore, but with a big new house we bought a year ago, we don't have the money to go anywhere very often...I'm a homebody anyways, so I don't mind. =)
