Everything I've read suggests the use of shelters for rodents to nest in... however I also need to be able to observe the females to see if they have given birth and keep track of how many days old the young are. With solid houses, I have to lift them up or clear away bedding to check on the females... but won't this disturb and stress them if they have just given birth and thereby be more likely to kill the litter?
Is it better to just give them nesting materials rather than containers for nesting?

I give bedding to most of mine, if there is big litters I will put in a box with a whole in it (with bottom still in) in for them to keep the babies together and then if I need to observe the litters then I just bribe mum out with a piece of food and pick the whole box up with litter inside it.
