Hi I have just started to feed my ferrets raw. I just got some ground raw chicken with liver and bone. So here is my concern. The chunks of the bone are not huge but are not that small either. My only concern is can the chunks of bone cause a blockage in the intestines. I am probably just being paranoid. Another event that happened tonight kind of triggered my paranoia was that riku was eating the left overs meaning mostly bone and she got a piece stuck between her teeth and she could not get it unstuck. Well just let me know what you think thanks.

If the bone is raw, the ferrets very strong stomach acids will dissolve them. And yes, unfortunately they will get a piece stuck in their teeth from time to time. Usually it's more of an irritant, like a piece of popcorn kernal would be in your teeth, and they will work it out on their own, but every so often, you have to help them out. When you think about it, ferrets have been eating bone in for many centuries, and the risk really isn't any higher than getting a piece of kibble stuck there. Only it's a lot healthier for them to eat bone than kibble!

Not to worry Sherrylynne is right. The fuzzbutts eventually learn to pick their own teeth Sometimes you have to help them out but most of the time they can get the bones out from between their teeth. As far as their tummies not being able to handle bone chunks, they can. It's very rare that you will ever see bone chunks coming out in their stools. You will find once you start feeding whole meats that they swallow bone much larger than the ground stuff you have and handle it easily. You have to remember there is always a risk to everything but ferrets are equiped to handle raw meat and bones and do it quite well. You have to watch the little newbies because sometimes they try things that they shouldn't...like swallowing a bone that's too large for them but for the most part they do very well. The biggest scare I ever got was from a choking incident with kibbles....try getting a couple of kibbles out of a ferret's throat ciao

ok thanks I feel much better now. I just noticed that someone had some white poop but in another post some people said that that is caused by eating fat and bone. talk to you later.
