Hi everyone I recieved this morning a large shipment of frozen goodies for my ferrets - Day old chicks, large weaner rats, small mice, and a large wild-killed rabbit. The rabbit is far too large for my guys to eat in one or two sittings - do any of you buy frozen rabbit? If so, how do you get it into manageable pieces - I was thinking of using a hacksaw, but wondered if experience can give any better tips? It's whole too, btw - all fur and guts included. Simply shot and hung in the freezer room until shipment. Thanks in advance

Not sure about the fur! I buy mine frozen, skinned, and gutted. All I have to do is cut/cleaver it up. I'll have to leave the fur/head part to someone more experienced, but I'd definitely take out the stomach/intestines, since they won't eat that anyway. They will eat the rest of the organs, however. I don't THINK they eat the fur, but will use it to play with

The herp store near me carries whole rabbits like that (And their jumbo rabbits are HUGE). I was hoping for a dressed one there actually, because Paulie is by no means ready for fur but I wanted to chop up some RMBs to add to his diet for enrichment. I think I'll just get pinkies for that.
But I digress. The guy at the store suggest simply chopping it up with a meat cleaver. He said it worked for him, but he looks like he could put a lot of power behind a meat cleaver too. But maybe I would try that?

Meat cleaver... Keep the rabbit frozen, put the meat cleaver blade just above the hips and smack down with a hammer, place the inside of the legs down onto the board and do the same inbetween the legs, then move up to just over the ribs and do the same, then up to the neck. You can leave fur on, they will sometimes eat it, other times I take it away, dry it out and put it in the bed box.

Ah, cool, shall have to try the cleaver/hammer trick. Luckily I've kept my old wooden block, don't think the glass chopping boards in the kitchen would be up for that!
