My vet didn't do any tests, she just prescribed some sulcrate (it's like pepto) and some antibiotics. As she said the symptoms was what she moved on. We also found an ulcer in the back of my Loki's mouth, so she assumed that he probably had some ulcers in his stomach too. He's coming to the end of his first batch of antibiotics but often the ulcers require 2 prescriptions before it's healed. Loki's going in at the end of this week for his check up and to see if he needs a repeat of his medication. Keep me posted, but ulcers are usually a really easy fix as long as you follow through with the antibiotics . Dakota could be deaf. What colour is she? Does she startle easily? Is she very vocal, screams at ther friends and such? It's usually not that important except if you're dealing with temperment issues and you're looking for reasons for aggression issues or biting. You also have to be more aware with them as they can't hear you coming and they can't hear you call them (not that ferrets come really well when they're called anyway ) ciao

Okay, so I am ether going to the vet tomorow, or thursday. Ether way, I would leave monster with him for a while. I have two classes tomorow starting at 9:30 till 12:15 or He can wait untill Thursday when I only have one class at 11 till 12:15. My vet is pretty nice about keeping them their untill after class. I am going to get mom to call them and ask about tomorow because I am worried about him.
Last night I offered a mouse, He bit into it, ate a chunk, and than left it alone. That is not like him at all! Expecialy when i had them fasted for two hours before hand. I also heard him breathing funny while sleeping. It was a high pitch snore.
My guys come to me! It may because I am the holder of the mice, but still..^.^ I will do some random tests to see about her hearing. She doesn't scream, but she and ripply are the loudest players. They will dook, and run etc. Lelloo screams at Jack when ever he takes her mouse so I know what a scream is.

Let me know how things go. I have serious concerns about leaving furbabies with ulcers or even suspected ulcers. They can cause serious problems if left untreated. Good luck ciao

I have to take him Thursday. My paycheck isn't coming in till this afternoon, and I have early class's today. One good thing is that he played last night with the rest of them, though he still acts different. He didn't want to do his usual roll over training with ripply and Jack. I will get some chicken for them, but between crappy pay checks, busy week, and the rest of the chaos..I just have not had time. I got home last night to find my parents had taken my sofa, and replaced my nice, big, heavy HD tv with this crappy black tv.

Ouch that hurts It's always that much harder when your parents add some stress to the situation I hope that you find out what's wrong with Monster. It's awful when our little ones are sick and we can't seem to come up with a decent solution. It always seems to happen when other stressful things are going on too. Good luck, keep me posted and let me know what's going on with Monster. ciao

I took him today, Thursday, and Ripply to the vet. She checked him over, gave rip a distemper. I vacinate every double years, Rabies are 3yr shots so every 6yrs, and Distemper every two years. I don't want to not vacinate, but yet i don't want them to get over vacinated at the same time.
The vet wrote out on a vet paper to give him 0.8ml of Pepto bismal Three times a day, or try Tagament (cimetitne) deluded the same way. If I notice teeth grinding in anyone else, Should I also give them some dose to help? Everything seems realy straight forward, and If i can, I would like to be able to treat things at home to save a vet visit.
I do a dose of some horse wormer deluded for the guinea pigs for when they show signs of mites. It clears up within a week, or two and if not, Than I take them to the vet.

I also might be taking in three, or two more ferrets. A freind, who found monster for me, has told me of two females that are stuck in a hamster cage eating fruits, and a seed pellet mix.

Remember, take all the meds that you've been given. The tagamet, don't save any. The symptoms will go away but the virus is often still active. It takes a minimum of a month to treat the ulcer. It may recur after the month but then you just get more meds to last you another month. They treated Loki with clavamox and it appears that after a month he's ok but he's still not eating on his own. He also has other health issues that require him to be on other meds as well. It worked really well and my vet has had a lot of success with it. The ulcers are not infectious and are usually caused by stress. The stressors may be just about anything, often not even things we think of as being stressful. Rescue those little ones if you can, but be careful in being able to pay for their care...(vet bills ) it's one of the problems doing rescue, it's never good when someone else has to rescue you. I've had to go get ferrets a couple of times when their people offered better homes to a fuzzy only to find themselves in trouble when it came to paying for their vet bills. The feeding part is easy it's the vet bills that will kill you Take care and keep me posted as to how things are going and how Monster is doing ciao

The vet acualy didn't give me anything. Just the slip and told me what to get and where to find it. I still need to locate the other stuff.
So how long should I treat monster? The vet said two weeks, but than they don't treat ferrets often enough for them to be entirely reliable.

I wrote this out last night and the computer or actually my internet went the way of the wind and lost the message Here we go again Make sure that when you get your meds that you continue to give it even though you see improvement to the point that he looks and acts healthy. Most vets consider a month a minimum treatment for ulcers in a ferret. The healing is swift but they seem to return very quickly if the treatment is too short. So, both my vet and myself agree than a minimum of a month, sometimes it requires 2 months of treatment but you can do a month...hold off and see if the tooth grinding returns. If it does then you just get another month's worth of antibiotics and what ever tummy settle (pepcid, or whatever your vet set out for him) and take for the second month. That usually seems to fix it. The thing is that sometimes it's an underlying issue that has caused it in the first place. With Loki it was kidney failure, thus an attack on his immune system. Take care, get those meds for your little one and let me know how it goes ciao

I already have peto bismal which is what the vet said to give him, or too try the other stuff. He hates it, but with a sneak attack he gets it done most of the time. He must be feeling better because he hasn't ground his teeth when i hold him.
Also, I heard that you can tell age by the clearness in a ferrets teeth? Monsters is haft way up his tooth. How old do you extimate him to be.

How's he eating? Playing? With the clarity half way up his teeth, I would put him at 5 to 7 yrs of age, without seeing it, I can't say for sure. If it's more than half he's over 7.....one third is 4 ....so half would be between 5 and 7. It's not an exact science but it works for the most part. Babushka's teeth were totally clear as was her gums. She was about 11 yrs old Ciao

Hello!
I made them all some soup with beef/mini steak peices in it. Everyone had some licks, and I held everyone atleast once to try to get them to eat a few peices. Monster and Lelloo ate the most. Four or five big peices each.
They also shared a mini mouse. Even Ripply got interested and tried some peices.
I will take a photo and post it, but it looks to be haft way up the tooth. He acts, plays etc normaly like the rest. sometimes he is a little slower to come down from the cage, and such. He also dead sleeps alot.
I figured out that dakota may be death. She is the last to come in at night. Dead sleeps on my bed untill I pick her up. She also makes a sqeaky noise when playing that doesn't fit a dook.

Sounds like everyone enjoyed their meal....great work. I find that some ferrets are older than others but the same age...if that makes sense Mad Max is 9 yrs old but out runs, plays and jumps some of my younger ferts. Nicodemus is behaves much older at 5 yrs of age. Rather like people I guess I think dead sleeping very much depends on the ferret. Napoleon is probably my biggest dead sleeper (I've posted some pics of him in a couple of threads What colour is your little Dakota? Does she have white toes, blaze, is white??? Boris is a sable and you wouldn't think there was anything wrong but he does have the tell tale white toes, but he has other defects (on top of being dumb as a stump). He can't close his mouth properly, has a small white dot under his tail, and he has something wrong with his back legs (they're not connected properly) This wasn't done by an injury or something like that, it was how he was put together. Lady "B" was an odly marked silver, as is Lady Natasha. Attila was a blaze with all white toes and the tell tale white spot under his tail. He died of cardiac arrest at 5 (heart problems are associated with neural crest disease which causes deafness in ferrets). Fun-Go is a DEW now, but he was a marked silver. I tested each of them with squeeky toys, except for Fun-Go he was so obviously deaf. ciao
