Ok so i asked a few days back what ferrets eat... my answers where that they eat whole prey, raw, and dried. I was just wondering... how much of whole prey should they get each week? and how much raw? and how much dried? i am just os confused on to what they eat and how often they need to eat it. thanks for reading! ferretlover01

Haha it's ok to be confused! It depends on what diet you want to feed. Raw, whole, or freeze-dried (dried). If you want to feed whole prey and raw, feed three differnet kinds of meat and different ages of whole prey. Like here's an example of a schedule: Monday:Chicken wings Tuesday: Turkey Necks Wednsday: Chicken Legs Thursday: Turkey Necks and 2 adult mice Friday:Pork (boneless) Saturday: Beef (boneless) Sunday: Chicken gizzard, heart, and liver If you want a raw diet you can have occasional mouse thrown in. It doesn't really matter as long as your ferrets are getting at least three differnet kinds of meat with bones 4 days a week, boneless 2 days a week, and organs one day a week. Feel free to ask as many questions as needed . And the Holistic Ferret Mentor Program helps too!

thankyou i am understanding this a bit better now but i am still a bit confused. the whole prey diet sounds a bit pricey, so i was thinking, is it any good to put a ferret on all natrual ferret mix from the pet stores, with a whole prey mouse like twice a week and some cooked chicken maybe twice a week aswell? How does that sound? any improvements would be greatly appreciated! :)lol thnx! ferretlover01

I'm not sure what you mean by "all natural mix". Is it a kibble, a premade raw? The occasional mouse is great. But ferrets really don't need anything cooked. It changes all the nutrient levels, and you'll find yourself adding this and that to make up for it, or wind up with a sick ferret. Why not try joining the mentor program? Feeding raw really is very simple! It just sounds scary if you're not accustomed to the idea!

If it's a kibble, then no. The idea of a natural diet is to give them meat, bone, and organ. If you want to throw in whole prey, great. Whole prey is the ideal, but not possible for many people because of the cost. Now, I'm not saying ferrets can't live on mainly kibbles, they can. And many do well. But for optimal health, it's raw/whole prey.

I'm going to back sherrilynne on this one too. Kibble has little purpose and if you're going to feed the optimum kibbles you're going to spend that much in raw food, so why not feed raw foods? I feed a mix of raw ground, whole meats and prey. Prey is indeed very expensive, so feeding just prey can get quite pricey, but you can feed pre prepared raw diets and whole meats (you can buy these on sale or through coops at some really reasonable prices). Let's face it, even if raw costs you more, the savings on vet bills is huge and let me tell you vet bills for ferrets is huge and guaranteed that you will have them These little guys can run a tab faster than a gambling addict. So if paying a little extra on food will save you some monster vet bills???!!! Just a thought Ciao
