Hi, I have seen many different diets that people put their ferrets on. i am just wondering what one is the best. I've heard of raw, dry, and live. i wouldn't want ot feed live because i can't stand seeing animals being eaten by other animals. especially rodents like mice or rats becuse i used to own rats. Thnx! ferretlover01

Whole prey is the #1 best, Raw with whole prey is #2, and Raw is #3. I feed raw with an occasional frozen mouse. I can't do all whole prey, because of the cost and it grosses me out! I also used to own rats and pet sit 2 often, so I couldn't feed my ferrets rats. Live can actually be dangerous unless it's a baby mouse. When you get your ferrets I would post in the Holist Ferret Mentor Program and let them help you make the switch!

Live baby mice are fine, but I prefer frozen mice or any kind of whole prey.

If whole prey is going to take up a good percentage of your ferrets diet, you'll need to vary the ages, as well as sources, of whole prey. This way, you cover all your bases for nutrients. The same goes for feeding raw. Minimum 3 protien sources, preferably all different ages over time.

If you don't like feeding live (ferrets are very successful hunters and can hunt full grown mice without any trouble and can hunt younger rats with ease) feed frozen but please remember to vary the ages that you feed. That being said you can feed raw meats and cover all your bases. It's not as good as a varied prey diet but it's a darn site better than kibbles. It's a all about varied degrees of improved health and how far you want to take it. I started feeding raw over 11 yrs ago, I will never go back to kibbles. The improvement that I saw not only in the general health but the ability of my guys to recouperate after an illness was staggering. Enough to convince my vet that these little guys really shouldn't eat kibble and she now tries to convince her ferret clients to feed raw. ciao
