Personally, I am a vegan, so I don't like the idea of animals being used for human consumption, BUT, I have no problem with it for carnivorous animals. Usually I feed store bought raw meat and either purchase or produce my own whole prey items (I hope to be producing my own on a regular basis soon). When I produce feeders at home, I can make sure they are well cared for, treated properly, fed a good diet, and get tons of social interaction with others of their own kind, toys, tunnels, ect. In other words, they are treated like pets until "dooms day". But I can't provide food for my ferrets (or cats and dog) just with my whole prey colonies. I'm moving in with my mother in law and that is just a no for now. She will allow me (while rolling her eyes at me) to have one or two groups of breeding mice (which will put a dent in feeding my snakes) but the other whole prey options are a no. I might be able to sneak it and have 3 mouse groups going and maybe one rat group.
But that still leaves me with the dreaded store bought (inhumanely raised, hormone filled) meat. I can try and buy the natural stuff, but it is never guaranteed that what you are feeding was humanely raised, which as a vegan, I need to make sure that the animal was raised properly prior to slaughter. So that brought me to the idea of hunting and fishing. Even now the idea of hunting has me feeling uneasy. All my life I've been against hunting (well me personally. People who hunt for food are ok. Just no sport hunting). The more I look at it though, the more I see it as a way to provide humane meals for my kids. (animals live in the wild, no confinement, hormones, ect). I am still battling with myself about this though. I can raise an animal myself, kill it, and feed it to my ferrets, but for some reason the idea of actively going out to hunt a wild animal has me really uneasy.
The weird part is, I'm just fine with fishing. I can easily go fishing, catch some fish and not really worry about it. Fish can't be the sole part of my kids' diet though, so that is where the dilema comes in. Any thoughts?
