I have never thought of hunting untill i got these two radscals. Now my whole perspective of things is thrown off.
I have an idea that i've been dieing to do just because i've always wanted to have a animal "skin". Is it possible that the ferrets could eat squeral or how ever you spell them, meat? I can hunt them, skin them so the ferrets can have a new toy, and than feed the meat to them.
Its not like the live prey because the animals aren't being forced to kill. It's hunting for food that i will not waist.
So..Do you think it's a good idea for me to see if i can get a squeral for the kids to try? plus the furr can be cleaned, dried, and than they can have something REAL feeling to play with.

I had a similar idea, but I would not hunt the animals. I plan on breeding rabbits once I have a house as a source of food for my ferrets and I figured I could use the skin/fur as hammocks or toys. Of course, as a vegan, I'm having a hard time actively considering this. It was an idea I had, but I'm not sure if I'd do it.
I would see no problem with hunting and using the meat as food and the skin as toys, but isn't there some sort of "rule" that you shouldn't feed wild animals to ferrets? I have no idea. I've never eaten wild caught food before (other than fish when I ate meat) so I'm not sure what kind of dangers it has.

I could not do the whole raising an animal to be slaughtered. It just feels wrong. But i see now that hunting is what comes natural. The food will be booked etc because of the fear of things being raw.
I will try my luck tomorow to see if i can't get a squeral. Isn't it the same as feeding deer meat to the ferrets, and game? Heck there are so many geese, i wonder if it's possible to hunt one of them for meat?

Wait, hunting comes natural to you or the ferrets?
I don't think I could hunt. If it came down to the survival of my animals, I could, but if another source is available I will use it. (this is why I'm breeding my own feeder animals).
I don't like raising an animal for slaughter either, but the only other two sources are hunting (which is a no for me) and raw meat (which the majority of the time comes from suffering animals kept on factory farms). So I like being able to raise my own and know what my ferrets are eating.
Though my grandfather did say he'd bring me back some deer next time he goes hunting. It is the only thing he hunts. I cannot exactly use the skins of mice or rats that I raise, but rabbits will have a decent enough skin to use. I'll have to learn how to make it into hammocks and things.
Update if you manage to get a squirrel.

Squirrel is fine for our ferrets, just freeze it for a month before hand to kill parasites. The whole thing should be stuck in the freezer to kill any fleas that are in the fur. I'm not sure what state you are in but you will probably need a license for hunting, there are also seasons and bag limits which restrict you to a certin number of animals during certin months of the year. If anyone finds out that you killing something without a license and/or during the wrong time of the year you can get a hefty fine that will cost you a lot of money.
