We were worried about Kale switching to raw, but tonight I gave Twitch and Lilly a chicken wing to split and he dove at them and took a piece of the chicken wing in his mouth and was determined to take it all for himself. He's eating it right now and I'm so excited! He loves it! Guess I won't have to worry about switching him. He just loves his chicken wing!

Right now he has pulled the entire chicken wing over to the corner and is eating it all by himself, crunching right through bone. I'm so proud of my little boy!

I actually had to take away the chicken wing last night. I gave them the chicken wing before going to bed and then my husband and I went to sleep. A few hours later, we hear this awful screaming. We thought Kale was being attacked by the other ferrets. The scream was horrible. We turn the light on and rush to the cage to find Kale still screaming, trying to take the chicken wing from Lilith. He's very possessive over his food. Normally we can give the chicken wings to the group whole and they demolish it together, but Kale has his own ideas and so now we are going to have to feed him seperately to make sure he doesn't scream about his food anymore.

Lol!! Oliver and Chewie used to fight over food all the time, so now I have to give them separate pieces of food in separate places of the cage. They still think the others food must be better, so they still fight once in a while, but they don't draw blood and get over it quick.

I'm with Suds, sometimes a little bickering is good practice! In the wild they'd be protecting their kills too! What I love is not the screaming, but the hissing at the food Diesel does this often while he's eating and it's adorable.

What I get the biggest kick out of is when they run with their food, huffing all the way

I don't mind the hissing at all, its the screaming that is unbearable. I'm worried my neighbors are going to hear and complain. (I'm not even supposed to have ferrets). They might not complain though. There have been nights where they stay up at all hours of the night talking and laughing in their backyard and playing loud music.
Kale has a serious food aggression problem. If you even touch him while he's eating, he starts screaming at you. It sounds like he's in pain, but he's just being protective over his food. He bit my sister yesterday because she went to pick him up while he had a chunk of beef in his mouth. I'm feeding him seperately from the group for now.

Kale will calm down in time once he learns there will always be more food around. The other thing you can try to help him feel more secure is give him his own dark feeding den I never heard srceaming so I realy dont donr know what the sound is like. My 2 always chatter at each other like an old couple at sunday dinner' lol..

The screaming is indeed loud and rather disconcerting the first few times you hear it The deaf ferrets are the worst for this, but when it comes to things like "giblets" well every man or ferret for him/her self . There is a difference between the get out of my dinner to I'm being hurt scream though. I still answer to either . I find that once they get used to eating raw the squabbles over food become less, except for special foods. They resort to warning chirps, and hisses instead of the whole out scream, unless your Lady "B" who just screams at everyone. The other day I came running because there was some screaming going on and I didn't recognise the scream. Turned out it was Loki and he was holding his own against the two alphas, Lady "B" and Attila over "his" rat. He's developed quite the taste for the rats (not bad for a ferret that would only eat ground mixes for the last couple of years). Sometimes, you have to think about where the aggression comes from, where did your ferret come from??!! Some of my guys were literally starving when I picked them up, so that too has to be taken into consideration. I find that those particular ferrets do not get over their food aggression even after years of having food all the time. ciao

He came from the same pet store we got Twitch, Damien and Lilith from. I'm wondering if he's deaf because normal sounds that cause the other three to wake up and come running, don't affect him. I've snapped my fingers right next to his head, and he doesn't notice. Could it be possible he's deaf?
