Hi My name is Amy, hence the screen name. Now a bit about myself. I'm the mom to 8 children. 19 yr old boy, 16 yr old boy, 15 yr old girl, 12 yr old twin girls, 11 yr old girl, 10 yr old boy and 9 yr old boy. Four of these are my step-children but they are "mine" and live with us full time and have supervised visits with their bio mom. I'm also the mom to 1 cat, 1 Guinea Pig and 2 Rottweilers. We recently lost one of our Guinea Pig's to a tumor. My 11 yr old adopted him. At the time he was adopted the Vet gave him a few months to live. With my daughters love and care he lived with us for 11 months. My daughter is heart broken but looking to adopt another small and fury. Years ago we had a ferret and my kids adored her. She was so much fun. Even back then I researched food and it looks like from the researching I've done most feed the same foods I was feeding 4 years ago. With the exception of the prey feedings.... just can't get myself to do that but do like the pre made raw foods. I know they are more costly but I'm used to having the rotties. Just their food alone cost me $100 a month lol We currently don't have any ferrets but we are on the search for one to adopt. I know it will be a challenge because for the most part we wont know what she/he has been through but we just don't buy we always rescue. Out of the four animals we have three were rescues and one we bought from a breeder. I'm not sure how many ferrets are in shelters waiting to be adopted but we will keep our eyes and ears open for one to come our way! Anyways just wanted to intro myself and family. I'll be lurking and asking questions when I feel the need

Welcome Amy! I hope you enjoy the forum. You sound like you have a wonderful, loving home and family. Are you located in the US or Canada (or elsewhere?) If you are located in the US I can point you in the direction of several ferret shelters in your area. Good luck on your search for a ferrret!

I am in the US. I live in Sandy, Utah.
Not to long ago the ASPCA had 2 ferrets but they aren't there now. I do know that the shelters will more than likely have some because like it was said those impulse buys.
Having as many children as I do makes it a bit easier. My 16 yr old graduated from high school at 15 and is home and driving me nuts so I've got him working on building a cage for the new baby/ies and my 15 yr old is great at sewing and is home schooled so she'll be making bedding.
The baby/ies will get lots of attention. Although my kids are very well trained in animal interaction, other than the 3 oldest, no one interacts with the animals without supervision.
How we ended up with Missy (our ferret from before) was I worked at a hotel and someone left her in a room. The manager asked me what she was and what to do. At the time I did know a bit about ferrets and ran out to the gas station and got her some cat food ( just for the then) and then took her home. She was the sweetest little girl. Never did bite and loved to cuddle.. she also loved to "escape" she was a great little girl. At that time I was living in Vegas but then moved and my roommate at the time stole her. It was very sad.

Hi and Welcome Amy That's quite the household It certainly will keep you busy This is a fantastic forum filled with some really knowledgeable and friendly people. Please feel free to prowl, post questions, suggestions and answers I hope that you find your ferret(s), they're out there. We were just discussing the overload of ferrets turned in on the rescue list on yahoo. We're all booked solid...I just took in 2 more this past weekend, poor little things Many of us are taking in more than we can handle so that no little ones get dumped into kill shelters. We all do what we can Good luck, I hope that I will continue to see you around the forum ciao
