Thanks Dresden. I'm excited to see him grow up too. I can't wait till he's an adult! Honestly I dont much care for puppies, kittens, or kits. When Fugue was a kit all I wanted for him was to grow up. Now that he's older I dont miss a day of his "kithood" We are working hard to socialize Copee the bets we can: To water To ferrets To our cat To people of all shapes and sizes To the vacuum cleaner, radio, etc To the car To other dogs To a variety of toys Etc We want to be sure to raise a well adjusted dog.

Giuli-- I'd add "plastic bags" to that list. My dog was a rescue, so we went through a lot of de-sensitizing to several different new objects to him. Fluffing out grocery bags to shake out water was enough to cause submissive peeing from him for a few days until we could get it under control. I know not a lot of dogs have that prob. But it's kind of a scary thing for them, even if they don't submissively pee. On a side note: My Shadow has the weirdest fear of kitchen sponges.

Oh! Good idea! Thanks for the tip.
My ex-b/f had a lab mix that was scared of:
Spanish Stairs Green Beans Squeeky toys Having a leash clipped onto his collar (but he did fine if we'd clip the leash to a harness) Thunder

Copernicus is absolutely adorable!! Hubby and I used to talk about "adding a puppy to the family SOMEDAY" but Nosferretu follows me around the house and sits by me just like a puppy:) I think I've had ferrets too long and they've convinced me I don't NEED a dog anymore - not that I could manage a puppy AND the 7 ferts LOL. Congrats and have fun!!

My Boston mix, Ajax isn't afraid of, but rather has an intense hate for anything that "measures"... That includes: Measuring tapes Rules and yardsticks Soft measuring tapes for sewing If she hears someone across the house using one of those stiff measuring tapes for construction, She freaks out on them! She is pretty much crazy!

Copernicus is ADORABLE. Does he have puppy breath? Wednesday is 2 yrs old and still has puppy breath. Its the cutest thing :-p A few things to get him used to? *Play with his feet and toes so he's not afraid of nail trimming *collar, leash, and harness? Sally wore a collar as a baby but ended up getting her nose stuck in Wednesday's and none of our dogs wear collars. Now, if we put a collar/leash on her, she starts flipping out and screaming. She wont walk on it, so i have to carry her if we go out to the stores together :/

YES! PLEASE!! Make sure he is fine with having his paws touched.. Touch them constantly!!!!!!!
We started fostering Skip when he was about 8 1/2 months old (Adopted him a few months later) and he to this day doesn't like having his paws touched, as much as we have tried to help him accept it. We have to cut his nails when he is asleep and dreaming..
I am glad you are socializing him. My cousins dog is small and my cousin was in charge of her from day one and never socialized her (She got her when she was about 6 weeks old).. She is tiny and thinks she is dominate over all dogs. She is HORRIBLE with other dogs. She is only partly okay with my dogs because they see each other often, but she growls at any dogs she's not seen before.
Also make sure he is okay with having objects in his ears (For cleaning).. Dogs who aren't exposed to that sometimes won't let their ears be messed with.
He is a cutey and I'm excited to *watch* him grow.

Yes, and make sure he gets used to all sorts of grooming since he could potentially have quite a lot of hair. Get him used to brushing, scissors, the hair dryer too. Nails are super important, as everyone else has said.

Well its been about 3 weeks since we brought Copernicus home. He is adjusting well to the family. He's very "in your face" and I feel bad because the cat and ferrets get kinda sick of him. Fugue likes playing with Copee, but after a while its like "get the heck away from me!" . He's learning to be respectful of little old De (who will be 9 next month! Ah! She's getting old!). The cat is even warming up to him! They were playing the other day, but only for a moment before Zeph hissed at him and bolted off. Mizu is still adjusting to the puppy. He doesnt viciously attack Copee anymore, but he will bite Copee if I'm not looking. Potty training is going alright. Tim is with Copernicus all day (he's currently unemployed) and I take copee out to potty at 3 am every night (boo hiss). He'll be doing a "puppy manners" class this January at my work, so we are excited about that. He's growing like a weed and he's such a good boy. We are having a blast socializing him and we can't wait to get him involved in some competitive "doggy sports" once he is a year old.
