I have never bought a turkey before (I'm vegan) and I was wondering what a decent price is for a turkey this time of year.
I saw a 12lb Free-Range turkey for $21.50 at New Seasons today.... is that a good price?
Also... What will I find in the turkey when I bring it home? No organs, some, all? Are there any bones the ferrets won't be able to eat because they are too thick/hard?
Thanks guys!

That price is pretty fair for a free-range turkey, I'd say.. I've only ever gotten "normal" turkeys for as low as 33 cents a pound.
In the bird (either inside or in the neck cavity, somethings in both) you should find a neck, liver, gizzard and heart. The leg bones won't be edible and the thigh bones may not be but you can strip the meat off of those and have them some "meaty meat" too.

The wings probably aren't edible either. The long bone definitely isn't. The double bones probably won't be either. They can chew on them though! I know Lucrezia enjoys doing this

33 cents per pound! GEESH!
I'm sure my pooch would love those larger bones, or the rats. As you said SherryLynne, I know they will love chewing on them, at least to get the cartilege off!

I picked out the turkey today... I don't know why but I picked up a large 16 pound turkey for 1.79/lb. It took me almost three houses to chop and bag it up! It was still mostly frozen, and I swear at one point my hand was close to frost bite! EEK The packaging said it had giblets... but I didn't expect them to be in a PLASTIC BAG INSIDE THE TURKEY!... that is so weird on so many levels. Also inside the turkey was its neck (already cut off) and a turkey part I couldn't identify...!!! At first I thought it was an alien turkey fetus, but now I think it was the turkeys butt. I don't know if that is possible. It was like a close to fist size chunk of fatty meat. It had a small bone inside and had three strange skin flaps on the outside, wtf? Any ideas on what this could be? Overall, it ended up being quite a lot meat, 28 full snack baggies which should feed them for about the same amount of days. Almost all of it is boneless meat because the bones were huge! My pup will enjoy the extra junk on a special day

I saw turkey tails, turkey necks, and turkey gizzards at the store today. We NEVER have those available, and they were cheap! Too bad NONE of my animals like turkey. I feel like I dont get to rejoice in the awesome meat deals and variety. *runs off and cries*

Any ideas on what this could be? That would be a turkey tail. They are a good RMB, and around thanksgiving you can actually buy them seperate from the turkey, on a little styrofoam tray with the plastic wrap on it. (Just like chicken wings or turkey necks.) They usually arent widely available except for around thanksgiving. If you find turkey tails in your area, STOCK UP! They are a great RMB for ferrets that can't tolerate chicken, and they are a nice change of pace for ferrets that usually eat chicken for their RMBS. Turkey necks are great too

Thanks for the information Giuli.
I just think it's such a weird idea to put the turkey's tail, neck, and PACKAGED organs into it like it is some sort of... storage bin! People are so weird, who thought of doing that? Haha. It's probably just me being a crazy vegan but... seriously!
What happens after Thanksgiving to all the turkeys that haven't been sold? Do they go on clearance or are they just stuck in the freezer until later?

Hmmm....I dunno. I would think the turkeys would be around through X-mas (some people have a turkey dinner for xmas too). But that is good thinking though! There will probably be a big 'clearence sale" on turkey.
*cries again because her animals hate turkey*

Has your new baby tried turkey yet? Maybe he could be the turkey eater of your family!

The turkey tail (or pope's nose -- not sure the why of the name ) is absolutely awesome for putting weight on skinny ferts...skinny anything for that matter. I make sure my skinny ones get a serving of these fatty delicacies. ciao

God, Heather- I haven't heard that particular phrase for the tail in years . That's what we always called it when I was young!

I'm not a crazy vegan just a crazy vegetarian but I share your surprise at discovering that. My first time buying a turkey was similar!!
