Hi. I was planning to introduce myself tonight and try to start getting my two furrkids on a natural diet. However, now I need other advice and suggestions.
Both of my babies are about 1.5 years old. Bastien, the male, has recently been diagnosed with adrenal disease. He is on melatonin daily and other than missing some fur, seems to be doing ok. My little girl, Melinda, has been fine up until the last couple of days when she started being a little lethargic. Tonight she did not want to get up and when I picked her up she was shaking. She "inhaled" some baby food and the shaking seemed to slow some what. She pooped (looked ok) ate some more baby food, a little ferretvite and ferretlax (just in case) and then just wanted to curl up and go back to sleep.
I am really worried now and could use any suggestions or advice you can give.
Thank you!
teri (and Bastien and Melinda)

Hi and welcome... On a more somber note I would strongly suggest that you get your little one to the vet. Lethargy is listed in a number of ferret diseases from the not serious to extreme. Shaking is common for a ferret who has just awakened from a deep sleep. It's used to bring up their body temp. I would be very concerned for a ferret that is under 2 yrs of age who is off their food and sleeping overly much. It's just my opinion and I'm sure there will be others that will hop in with suggestions or ideas. They're a good group, they'll help you if they can. Good luck and I hope that you will post an update and properly introduce yourself and your furbabies when you have less concerns on your mind ciao

Thank you for the welcome! I took Melinda to the vet this morning. She is more alert than last night but definitely not moving around much. Temperature was 105.8!!! She's staying at the vet to get fluids and antibiotics.

How's your little furbaby? Doing better now that she's had some fluids? Sounds like an infection of some sort. I hope you find out what is wrong ciao

Melinda got to come home last night as the fever had finally gone down and she did eat a little baby food. This morning she at an entire jar of baby food and has a little more interest in her surroundings. Still wants to sleep more than anything. I took her back in this morning just so the vet could look at her again. Her fever was gone so I got to take her back home. She actually went up to the top shelf of her cage as soon as I put her back in. She sniffed her kibble but wasn't interested (of course, she did have all that baby food an hour earlier!) She gets antibiotics for the next three days and I have to keep a really close eye on Bastien in case whatever this is gets a hold of him too. The vet is thinking it was something viral but to my knowledge no one that has been near her has been sick... who knows? At this point I am just glad that she is getting better Thank you all for your advise and welcome. Hopefully I will be able to start getting the kids of kibble and onto something better for them soon. teri

Melinda is almost back to her old self!! Still sleeping a lot but is more active and inquisitive. She actually chased Bastien around a little (ok -for about 10 seconds but it's a start!) And the big news - she has actually eaten a couple of (TINY) pieces of raw chicken. I have been putting a small amount in baby food. Bastien still thinks its poison and spits it out but Melinda has gotten to where she will actually eat some. She even took a couple of the bigger pieces (pinky nail size) to her hidey hole behind the computer desk and ate them! I guess it's about time to start getting serious about this process! YEAH!!!!

As of this morning, I have declared Melinda 100% recovered... She was running around, happy dancing, war dancing and chasing Bastien just like her old self!! Yaaaay! It was So good to see the little nutball back to herself. I did post in the HF mentor section and am working on getting the kids to eat meat. As I type this, Melinda is chowing down on chicken baby food with pork mixed in. Bastien ate a little of it then found a piece of pork that didn't get ground up small enough and that was the end of that. Oh well, one step at a time. Thanks again for all of your good wishes and for being committed to this site. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and you will all be part of my Thank you list!!! teri I just caught Melinda trying to stash the spoon that I had left on the plate. Now I have to go climb under furniture to see what else is there.... Oh Joy... somebody needs to tell her that mommy is too old for this!!!
