This probably is a stupid question. But like I said, I know NOTHING about meat. My mom will get me to go get something and freak cuz of the price sometimes LOL.. *cough* Anyways How do I know what butcher to go to? By prices or how clean the meat is and all that? A lot of you are from the states, so the prices and stuff I see around here are usually US prices. So I don't no whats over priced and whats not. I can't keep buying from the stores by my house. I'm thinking of making a trip every week/ever other week or monthly to Walmart or No Frills because they're cheeper (once my kids are on raw *sigh*) Right now its about $19 to $25 for 5 bonless chicken breast or around $10 for 2 But if a butcher is cheeper, then why not? And I could get more kinds of meat. Any ideas?

There is nothing wrong with shopping around for the cheapest meat. It doesn't really matter which butcher you get the meat from.. There are guildlines that the butchers have to follow, so they all probably sell just about the same stuff, just at different prices.
That is A LOT of money for chicken!!!! The chicken we buy at Wal-Mart comes in a bag that is 10 pounds and it only costs 50 cents a pound US...
We are adventurious though and most of the meat we get is free. But we go to slaughter houses and meat processors and get our meat out of their scrap barrels. If you can do something like that you will save TONS of money in the long run.

if you have a walmarts its probbly your best bet for now you can find lots of good things at decent prices. It never hurts to ask your butchers for scraps alot of them will give or sell them very cheap to you rather then throw them away . also do alot of price shopping it very's from town to town and time of year in many area's look for sales and try to buy bulk during them

That's got to hurt, those are Canadian butcher prices When you get your chicken at Walmart, is it seasoned? I looked through our available meats and it was all either seasoned or salted Not good for furbabies....but I think that your Walmarts must be different than ours. We also don't get prices like that. ciao

I'll ask my dad what butcher he gets his beef from then. Should be something there I can get. Walmart it is!! Hopefully there is a deal like that here What are scraps? *blush* I keep hearing people talk about getting scraps from butchers...but what are they? I know meats that people don't usually eat, but what kinds/ form where? I've never gotten meat from Walmart before. But I know you can get unseasoned/salted from them Hopefully the prices are better then the stores by my house!

Scraps are anything meaty that they won't use, really.. Trimmings, connective tissue, tendon, things that just aren't good enough cuts of meat for people, stuff they dropped on the floor, etc.. A lot of the places you call will probably say all they have is bone but that is impossible.. There is meat that is connected to bones that they won't bother messing with. One place we went to said all they had was bones but we walked out with 80 pounds of meat. A ferret can't eat beef ribs but if you want to take some time you can cut the meat from inbetween them. You most likely will have to be willing to dig around in their scrap barrels a little. We do, but we don't mind it.
Heather, the chicken we get at Wal-Mart is not seasoned. It is bone in, skin on. There is some water in the packaging so it adds up to a little over 50 cents per pound.

That would be nice. All I can get here at Walmart is seasoned boneless, skinless chicken no good for my furbabies and not very good for me either Oh, well. Back to the butcher's block ciao
