If they dont finish their food but they seem as energetic as ever and happy and healthy i wouldnt worry about it. they'll eat when they are hungry. My buddy often doesnt finish his meals veryoften i put them back in the fridge for a while then after hes played a while i'll offer him some more. If they arent looking skinny and are gaining weight or not acting unhealthy dont worry about it.

No you have things right, it is better to offer WHOLE raw food and WHOLE prey. They are more then capable of chewing it up. If they leave food its probably because you are feeding too much. If they leave a little food I wouldnt worry about it, if they leave ALOT of food then cut back how much you offer.
Some people offer ground meat products to transition or commerical raw products (which are often ground) but whole raw will ALWAYS be better, it helps to keep teeth clean, it give the jaws a workout, it has a lower risk of bacterial contamination (grinding exposes more surface area to bacteria) and grinding can degrade/reduce certain nutrients (such as taurine).
