Hello Everyone!
I'd been browsing the internet for info on switching my 4 fur kids to a raw diet and I met mentor TSS over at Natural Ferrets. She (?) pointed me over here to HF and I have to say... you guys rock! I'd been browsing around the site and there's such a wealth of knowledge and experience from all the ferret lovers. But the best part is the amazing sense of support and community. Thanks Giuli for creating this site!
Now a little bit about myself and the kids. My hubby and I are 2 chemistry geeks living in Toronto. We're currently owned by 2 cats (D'Artagnan and Polgara), 4 ferrets and a Siamese fighting fish that refuses to die (Quasar is over 3 yrs old!).
So far there had been 7 ferrets in our lives. Merry and Pippin are our very first ferrets. They're adopted from the Toronto Humane Society. Unfortunately Pipsy passed away 2 yrs ago. But Merry is still with us. He's a mellow sable who loves cuddles and lining up his precious umbrella collection. (Yes, purse-sized umbrellas. He picks them up in his mouth and trots on his very tippy-toes to drag them over to his hidey hole behind the couch!) We recently found out that his mellowness can partly be attributed to his insulinoma.
Next came Sally and Taffy. Our vet told us about the Ferret Aid Society in Toronto and the amazing Ms. Randy Belair. Randy in turns introduced us to Sally and Taffy. These 2 little girls are complete opposites: Sally is a DEW and a rambunctious hell-raiser; Taffy is a teeny-tiny sable who loves to wrap herself around our wrists like a koala and gives the best kisses. We loss these two precious little girls this summer: Sally in June to a rare form of cancer (histiocystic sarcoma), then Taffy just 2 weeks ago in October to lymphoma.
After losing Sally, we managed to pull ourselves together and visited FAS again at the end of the summer, looking for a new buddy for Merry and Taffy... and we came home with THREE! Gadget is a cute silver blaze who loves rubber objects. On his first vet visit, he almost managed to steal the Crocs off our vet's feet! Tasslehoff (Tassy) loves nothing more than us throwing stuffed animals for him to chase after. He has the most silky soft coat. And then there's Ursus Polaris, aka the Poley Bear. He looks just like the baby polar bear in the Coca-cola commercials. This 3.5 pounder is a big boy! The three of them play together so well at the shelter we just didn't have to heart to break them up, so they all came home with us. We'd introduced ferrets to each other before so we thought this time is no big deal either. Well, turns out Tassy really has a bully streak in him. He's been kicking Merry's butt and literally scaring the poop out of Mer since the day he moves in. Play time now consists of rotating ferrets into different rooms and slow, supervised "intro" between Tas and Mer. We look forward to the day when they will share a chicken wing in peace.
It'd been a tough summer for us, losing both of our girls. Merry being diagnosed with insulinoma was the final push we needed to hunker down and take charge of the kids' health. We'd tried giving them raw chicken wings, ground rabbit/ duck, cooked/ raw chicken, jarred baby food, etc before but they just don't recognize them as food. We believe Merry is a Marshalls ferret (tattoo on his ear) and he eats nothing but Marshalls kibbles (and thank goodness he didn't turn his nose up to a/d after his surgery). The other 3 are on EVO. I'm counting on Gadget to be the leader in this all-natural, raw movement. He's the most adventurous with food. Who knew a ferret would like sashimi? (No he didn't ask me to put the wasabi/ soya sauce on for him! )
We're really excited about the mentorship program and we look forward to all the great pointers on this great adventure! Thanks again!
