Do they have to be frozen after they are crushed if you are saving them??

I always keep mine in a ziplock baggie in the freezer. I don't honestly know if you have to or not. It was what I was told to do way back when I first started feeding a raw diet....I just never questioned it I don't use it often, only when I have a sick ferret who can't eat bone even ground up. There you go ciao

Honestly it doesnt really matter, just use the same sanitary precautions when handling them as you would raw meat (they can harbor salmonella in the shell). Its okay for your ferret, but you do need to be careful. Obviously don't go into "panic mode" but do atleast wash your hands after handling the eggshell if you touch it directly.

How fine do I need to crush up the shells? I pound it with a hammer, but its not like a dust. Is this ok?

I use a mortar and pestle...the more like a powder it is the better it's absorbed. If it's in chunks, even small ones it comes right out the other end I know some use their coffee grinders. They're not real expensive but because I don't normally use egg shell I find it's not really worth it for me to go out and get one. ciao

I know the have one at walmart for about $15. Meijer's had them for $25-30. I use a bowl and a spoon but it still doesn't make them in to powder.

How much was a mortar and pestle? Is that really effective? I got mine at TJ Max or Marshalls I forget but they will both have them there and they work great! They are made out of Marble and I dont remember how much they were but everything there is CHEAP anyway.
