One night right after feeding Wysong Archetypal 1, both Pandora and Reks had bright pink, almost red nose, gums, and paw pads. They were acting fine, though. It eventually went away, but it scared me. The night before when I fed the wysong, Pandora vomitted and started going insane, running up and down her cage. I didn't know what to do, so I gave her some ferretlax, which made her stop! Was it a hairball, bad food, salmonella (wouldn't happen that fast), eating too fast, or playing right after eating? She was fine after I gave her the lax and started playing again. So the next night I watched her (and Reks) closely. That's when I noticed the bright pink gums, nose, and paw pads. Has anyone else had any problems when feeding Wysong Archetypal 1, or anyone have a ferret that got salmonella poisoning? Normally their gums are light or pale pink. Is this normal? I know if I ask my vet, the first thing she's going to ask is what they ate. She's against raw. I really hope Pandora doesn't have salmonella based on the vomitting and me thinking (not knowing) she is dehydrated. How long does it take for salmonella to effect them (after the incubation period)? Could they die from it, or live with it, but still with symptoms. I'm worried.

Salmonella requires a incubation period of 6 to 8 hrs in the digestive tract. A ferret's digestion occurs in less than 4, it's rare, not impossible but very rare for a ferret to get salmonella, because of a ferret's short digestive tract salmonella winds up outside before any damage has been done inside A ferret who has an upset tummy and is going to vomit often charges around looking for a place to puke...hence an irratic and often distracted behaviour. Her vomiting may have been caused by eating too fast, having something getting stuck??? any number of things. Ferrets are prone to flue type virus' same as us. I can't say for sure (I'm not a vet) but the pinking up might be caused by an allergy, which may be why your little one vomited too.??!! Just some ideas. Hope it helps a little. Can you not find a vet who might support you feeding a raw diet? ciao

This sounds like an allergic reaction to something. Have they been vaccinated, medicated or had any spot ons recently? I have seen/heard of this with vaccine reactions. If not, try to think of what they have been exposed to - cleaners, surface pesticides or the such. It could be a food allergy as well - very weird for both to have a reaction at the same time to the same thing.

Thanks for the responses! I don't think it's salmonella, I think I was overreacting! Pandora had a vaccine reaction a couple months ago to her last distemper shot, but they haven't had shots recently. I don't think it's the Wysong now either because they just get pinker every once and a while. Does this happen to your ferrets? Could it be them getting too hot while playing? I live in Texas, and even with the air conditioner blasting at 65-70 degrees, it still gets hot! They weren't exposed to any chemicals and weren't taking any meds of any kind so.......maybe Pan vomiting was either a hairball (since she got better right after the ferretlax) or her playing to fast right after eating. The vet I go to is where I work, but I started working there before I was opened up to the holistic world. A couple months ago I researched holistic vets in San Antonio, but there was only one at the time, and they only took dogs, cats, and horses! Just yesterday I decided to look again and saw another called Castle West Animal Hospital, and they specialize in exotics! (in the vet world, this includes ferrets even though they aren't really exotic) The vets name is Bill McGehee, and he was on the holistic vets list that Dr. Richard Pitcairn put together! I'm going to start secretly going here (if I and the ferts like it) and start becoming more holistic! I hope they can keep a secret =P
