my ferret has had some trouble walking since his adrenal surgery, especially on hard surfaces. I'm using an old folded sheet on the bottom of his cage at the moment, because we set up his midwest ferret playpen temporarily to have only two complete levels with his sister on top and him on bottom. I'm thinking of using old jean legs as slipcovers for the trays and ladders (I already started and they fit snuggly) or some walmart fabric with cotton balls or some type of stuffing in there to make it softer and a bathroom shag rug (washed of course) for the very bottom. Any potential issues?

I would worry about their nails getting caught on the bathroom chag carpet. I would go to walmart and get a couple yards of fleece and just fold that over on its self or if you have a sewing maching sew it a few layers thick and put that on the bottom of the cage instead. But i dont think that jeans would cause any problems. I have used my kids old sweatpants and sweatshirts as bedding and ramp covers.

i thing the rug would be the only concern. I agee on the fleece. You can also go to a second-hand store, they tend to have fabrics cheap, or at least old sheets you can use.

The other issue with bathroom rugs and carpet runners- is their rubber backing or foam backing- many ferrets will chew this and that's a potential blockage.
