Just today I noticed Bartleby was straining to pee, and he peed several times over the span of a few minutes. I will make a call to the vet tomorrow, but until I can bring him in, is there anything I can do for him? He is adrenal and has been on Lupron, but for 2 months or so he hasn't had the shot and has just had liquid melatonin. I give 1 ml a day, and today I just gave him a second ml. I am worried that his prostate is getting pushed by the adrenal gland. Would a Lupron shot at the vet fix this in a hurry?

Well, I went to the vet today and got a Lupron shot for him. I hope that's all he needs. They said if it continues I should call them and get an exam, but they are in a suburb, and I have a vet in the city I use for non-Lupron issues.

Lupron can work quickly on adrenal-related prostate issues depending upon the nature of the situation. For example if the prostate is simply enlarged from hormones, the lupron should help. But sometimes additional prostate issues (for example a bladder infection) can be involved as well, so additional treatment may be necessary. Just follow your vet's recommendation to contact him if problems persist. -jennifer

I just randomly read your post and thought I'd put in my two cents. My oldest boy Willy has been on lupron for oh 5 months at least. Just recently, and randomly, I noticed no pee was coming out. His prostate was so large from his adrenal disease that it cut off the flow of urine, so his bladder was hard as a rock. They had to do emergency surgery and insert a catheter so he could urinate. Just watch and make sure there's a good amount of urine coming out and he's not crying when he tries to go. My boy was fine and then all of a sudden it happened and nothing would come out. So be aware it can happen very suddenly.

Saw palmetto is used by jojodancer for her adrenal ferret's prostate issues. It was recommended to her by her vet. Before giving some to your ferret you need to contact a Holistic Vet to see exactly HOW much to give. Herbs can be very powerful and just as dangerous as traditional meds if too much is given. Here is some info in saw palmetto in the adrenal male ferret: "One other alternative supplement that has been seen clinically to help males that have stranguria secondary to an enlarged prostate is Saw Palmetto. I have had several clients report back to me with good results with this herbal remedy. Keep in mind though- this is not a cure. It is just palliative treatment to keep a ferret comfortable until arrangements can be made for other treatment. The form I recommend is the alcohol-free elixir at a dose of 3 drops orally twice daily. It is critical that a male ferret on this supplement be observed carefully for the straining to urinate getting worse or a complete lack of being able to urinate." I forgot about this post.
Guili, you posted a link from the vet my B-man got his Lupron shot. Same place that did his surgery.
That vet is a little hard for us to get to, so we brought Bartleby to a closer vet, and they did and x-ray and found that his prostate was out of place and was the cause of his issues. He is on pain medication. The vet said since we had just gotten a Lupron shot, it was just taking a little while to kick in and if the meds didn't work, we could get another Lupron as soon as 2 weeks after the original shot. Well, Dave has been at home while I've been at work, and he noticed that Bartleby is peeing much better. He has been on the vet's medications for about a week. I am supposed to call them back with his progress. The vet also said that Lupron worked better than melatonin which makes me a little sad, but they charge half of what my original vet does for Lupron, so it isn't all bad.
