It was their yearly to get their vaccines.
I was pretty much all around disappointed with everything that happened...
Here's why:
1. It was at Michigan State University's small animal clinic, so all of the students were on their first week of clinicals and obviously didn't know how to handle ferrets (even the girl who said she owns a ferret... )
2. I tried to talk to the vet about an alternative to ivermectin for heartworm preventative, but she had nothing for me. She didn't understand my concern about it being toxic, and simply offered Revolution in place of it.
3. I was rather excited to describe their diet as of late, and how healthy and active it had made them. They didn't care. At all. They didn't have praise nor criticism for feeding raw, and that was that.
4. Luna had a reaction to the distemper vaccine last time, so we made sure they remembered to pre-med with benadryl. Then Rikki had a reaction. He vomited twice, had to have a shot of diphenhydramine, and we ended up being there a total of 3 hours.
5. While palpating Luna's abdomen, the vet told me her spleen felt slightly enlarged. She said it could be due to a number of things (not naming any of them), and never really gave a reason as to why it was enlarged.
Since Luna had a reaction last time, we split her vaccines up...she got her rabies today, and is getting her distemper in a week. We're also going to have some bloodwork done since she's about 3 years old now, and that's the age where things will start going wrong. Is there any specific bloodwork that I should have done?
So...all in all it was a pretty bad day at the vet. I really hate going to the vet, where even the "exotic vet" that used to own ferrets herself doesn't even seem to know specifics about them.
Le sigh. It can be so difficult sometimes....
