I have a friend who has a ferret and she told me that he has recently stopped eating and when he does eat he'll throw it up about 5 minutes or so after he eats the food and that he is acting lethargic and seems to be losing weight also. I told her it sounds like a blockage (my dog had one, this is how I know) and would more than likely need surgery to fix and that it would also be very costly.
Are there any other options for her to get her little ferret back to normal? She told me she has no money until around the 18th or so and the vets around here don't do payment plans, you have to have money on the spot otherwise they won't see you. And if there is no other option for her, could this be something else too that would not cost an arm and a leg to fix? How many of you had ever had a ferret with a blockage and how much did it cost for you to get it removed? With the economy the way it is now, if it is a blockage she will more than likely get her ferret put to sleep so he doesn't suffer from hunger pain and any other pains that are associated with a blockage.. Thank for your help~ Poor guy, I feel so bad...

How much would that cost, you think?
I'll tell her to give it a try... but what if it doesn't? Are there any other things to try?

The pumpkin? Like less then $2 for a can of Libbeys 100% PURE PUMPKIN (NOT pumpkin pie filling). Now here is the thing, technically you can try some ferret-lax if that doesnt work, but bear in mind that if the ferret is consuming pumpkin and they dont vomit it up then they will get "backed up" behind the blockage. I gave Sams pumpkin and saw that he felt VERY sick, I rushed to the vet, because they wouldnt work with me on surgery he had to be put to sleep immediately. I couldnt bear the thought of seeing him in pain. He looked so very sad. It killed me to see him like that. Try the pumpkin and hopefully that will work. But if it doesnt go through within 3-4 hours and especially if he doesnt puke it up in that time it is time to go the vet IMMEDIATELY, either for surgery or to be put to sleep.

Thanks Giuli! I'll let her know.. And I'm sorry to hear that you lost your little fuzzbutt... It's hard I know.
My dog had to be put down from the bowel obstruction she had because there was just too much damage for the vet to fix.. She was my favorite dog and the bestest friend anyone could ever have...

You could try a ferret or cat lax - not something you would want to give on a regular basis depending on the ingredients - but in a situation like this it couldn't hurt.

The problem is, is she is flat broke until payday. I told her to apply for the care credit card but I guess you apparently have to have a driver's license to get one and she doesn't have one.
Uggh.. I feel so bad for that poor little ferret and I would help if I could but I am also flat broke and can't help her out...

Go get some 100% pure UNSCENTED vaseline. Give it about a half a teaspoon. It's cheap and I cannot say for sure that it will help the little guy but it has helped Weezer (he ate foam). It can be given twice a day or once every day. That is the main ingredient in ferretlax anyway. I don't suggest it being given unless a ferret needs it but if it saves the ferrets life then enough said.

What about a cat hairball treat treatment? Would that work, you think? And if so how many should she give? The bag she said suggests giving I think 4-6 treats to a grown cat, so maybe like 3 or 4...

Forget the treats, go straight for the petrolium jelly (either pure vasaline or ferretlax)
