Hi! My husband and I have been owned by ferrets for over 10 years now. Hubby has 3 older skin kids from his 1st marriage that live with his ex and I brought furkids to the marriage. We are currently kept by 7 wessels and have 13 angels waiting for us at the bridge (Chuckles, Pokie, Bandit, Queenie, Pooh Bear, Luke, Bo, Ginger, Smokey, Adrea, Godrey, Boomer, Honey). I can only imagine when it's my time to go....I'll have some many angel babies coming to see me that it will blow my mind !
Here in Michigan, ferrets weren't legalized until 1993 so specialized ferret veterinary care wasn't and still isn't always easy to find so I researched all I could. Plus, after spending thousands of dollars at allopathic vets only to wind up (in many cases) with a huge vet bill and a precious baby to bury, I knew I had to be doing something wrong (heck, it seemed like even the vets weren't getting it right!). We had ECE grace our house in the early days (before I knew better to quarantine), many adrenals, and a couple insulinomics. It wasn't until our last insulinomic that I discovered the Natural Ferrets group and took the plunge with a RMB diet. Then I read Dr. Lonsdale's "Raw Meaty Bones" and I felt enlightened and it all made sense.
We made the switch from "crap in a bag" to a raw diet about 2 years and am proud to say have been "kibble-free" for one year. The results speak for themselves and justify the extra time, effort and sometimes cost.
I've signed up to be a holistic mentor this summer and am really looking forward to helping other fert's people make the transition to a natural, raw diet.
I'm very interested in a homeopathic health regimen also. After losing one of our rescues, Godfrey, to adrenal disease I was determined to find a way to NATURALLY help the fuzzies combat disease and illnesses. The poor little guy was at the humane society twice, lived across the street with a neighbor for a little while, then came to his forever home with us. I haven't had a sweeter, more appreciative, happy little soul in our home since. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't love our current 7 more but they are all kit-bought little brats we've raised. I needed a little break from some of the heart-ache that goes along with the rescues - especially on top of losing my father after a long battle to cancer earlier this year. Godfrey inspired me to research melatonin treatment for adrenal which I still practice successfully at home today (without a vet).
The fuzzies diet consists mainly of Cornish Game Hen, chicken feet, turkey/chicken gizzards/hearts, and eggs & kefir (weekly). I supplement salmon oil about weekly and they get flaxseed oil daily (on their food and as a treat). I haven't been able to successfully introduce much additional variety but all seem to be flourishing. We have an allopathic/homeopathic vet that is a true real life "Dr. Doolittle" but I don't have to see him too often because my babies are so HEALTHY
Other than my work (with a sweepstakes/contest co.) and taking care of my husband, my ferrets are my kids and happiness.
I'm looking forward to sharing and learning with other fert owners and would love to make some new ferret friends along the way.
Amy & Fuzzies7:
Precious 6 YO Dark Sable - her name really should have been the Native American word for "little foot runs like thunder" but I haven't been lucky enough to bump into a Native American yet who can tell me how to say it
Spooky 4 YO DEW - He is my little heart boy and I swear we can communicate non-verbally (no I'm not crazy).
Kimba 3 YO Chocolate Roan Silver Mitt w/adrenal - She is my little "Kimmy Sunshine" but overcompensates for her small size by being quite a little brat!
Ozzy 4 YO Roan Silver Mitt also adrenal - He is just a big, sweet, goofy guy - momma's "boyfriend"
Niblet 1 YO Roan Silver Mitt - She is definitely from the same gene pool as Ozzy because some of her markings are identical and she has the same sweet goofiness about her that Ozzy does but, unlike Ozzy, her name has rung true to her personality
Nosferretu 2 YO Champaign - My other heart buddy. He is just so big, sweet and beautiful! He's my little shadow. He will come when I call him and know he would be extremely talented if I had the time to train him. Oh well, they've got us trained right - WE work while they rule the roost
Dooki 4 MOS Dark Sable with hints of silver on his underside (3 white toes on each front foot, white dots on his knee caps, and a creamy bib) I call him my little funyun because he's helped me with my recent depression more than drugs or anything
