On Saturday night my boyfriend and I were on his tandem bicycle like 7pm and he got stung by something and had a severe allergic reaction. His face swelled up (it was so freaky looking), he got hives EVERYWHERE, he was dizzy, and then eventually he threw up all over his driveway. Thats when we were in the car on the way to the ER.
It took me 45mins to convince him he needed to go to the ER and this wasn't just going to go away. I was SO MAD at him, he sat on the couch and kept patting the seat saying "sit by me baby" and I'm almost crying because I know what happens when you are severely allergic to something! Your throat swells up, you suffocate, and then you die! Did he think I could do anything if that started to happen?? Its a 25mins drive to the hospital! Did he think his throat would just slow down once we were on the way?! OMG!
And then I'm trying not to speed on the highway to the hospital, and he was laying down in the seat next to me. And then we parked and walked to the ER because he didn't want me to drop him off. It must have taken us 10-15mins to walk to the desk from the parking garage. At this point he looks cold, even though his skin his bright red from the hives, and his lips are no longer as pink as they usually are. So I'm starting to panic a bit now, but I think he's really just cold. We are in line to register and he's feeling sick so we grab a wheel chair. Now its our turn in line and he gives his name, I grab a throw-up bowl, and he does that in line. I wheel him to the back and we're there a few minutes, then his throat feels funny and they take us back to a room and start pumping him with shots and IVs. Within 15mins his hives are gone. The Benadryl makes him fall asleep. We were there about 2 hours I think.
Now he needs to carry an EpiPen with him wherever he goes, and all these pills, and next time it supposedly will get worse. That might have been the most stressful and scary 4 hours of my life! He got stung at 830pm we think, but we didn't get to the hospital until 10pm, then back home at 1230am! He was in total denial that he needed anything, that he could just sleep this off. Honestly, I called Urgent Care at 9pm and I said hives all over his body and face swelled, and I said ER? And the woman said "uh...yeah" And then I called back at 930pm when he refused to get in the car after my begging and almost crying, and she said to call 911 and have them try to convince him. Then he stood up and got nausecous and thats when he decided we should go, and when I pointed out the weird swellings along his body. Then he threw up in his driveway.
All in all, I needed to vent. So thanks. And I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. Its incredibly scary. Also, if it has, is the second time worse than the first? Thats what the ER nurse told us would happen.
