ok I learned about ferret math quickly lol I am looking for a playmate with hershy now. 1.Should I wait untill I get the second buddy ? and start them both at the same time ? 2. Start Hershy now ? 3. I just switched her to better kibble if I start her now would it confuse her to where she mite not eat ?
I plan on switching her to raw for now untill I can get the older laidie's in my house use the ideal of having hole prey in the freezer's . They still think she is a rat as it is , but are slowly comming around . And they both are scared to death of rodents so I need to be suttle in the whole prey deal ....

if you think that you would get the new ferret within a month i would say to wait to switch the one you have now. if its going to be more then a month i would go ahead and switch your baby now.
LOL i know what you mean about ppl thinking that the ferrets are rats i had some family members thinking that too

thanks I am looking at shelters now to see if I can find a match for us . I feel bad leaving Hershy alone all day while I am at work so the sooner I can find a playmate the better Plus it will give me more time to read more on the site . very interesting reading all the threads on newbie's switching .

. They still think she is a rat as it is , but are slowly comming around . I hate it when people call them rats, rodents, ect! I always end up ranting about how they are actually mustalids!

My Gramma would always call my first fert a rat, and then she swatted (!!!!!) her off her dresser once and got nipped. After that I couldn't convince her so I stopped trying. But it does bother me. I have had rats and they are so different. Not just in looks but in how they behave and eat, ect. I just don't understand how people could think a ferret was even related to a rat.

My De weighs one pound and is adrenal. She is bald on her tail. I took her to the vet the other day to get a Lupron shot and I heard people whispering in the background "Is that an albino ferret? Or is it a mouse? A rat?" I could see why people would think she's a rat...she IS small and has no fur on her tail, but a mouse? Holy crap I hope I never come across a 1lb mouse! Yikes! The best though was when someone came up to me when I was walking Mizu (bf's ferret) and asked me why I had a baby otter!

The best though was when someone came up to me when I was walking Mizu (bf's ferret) and asked me why I had a baby otter! Now thats cute! A baby otter! LOL Most people just think Apple is a weasel (pretty much true) but I always correct and say ferret. All my friends (except the married ones, I think they still think he is a rodent even though he eats rodents?!) love Apple, and the ones who recently met Kiwi are just in love with her! A little girl down the street wants a ferret so bad, but I don't think her Mom would go for it. Also I didn't tell her that he eats rabbits or other raw meats. I told her high quality ferret or cat food is ok! I couldn't break that to her! But she LOVES Apple and always cuddles him when we go outside! Obviously if she really wanted one (I think she is 7), I would have to tell her they eat meat, but I warned her what is not ok to feed them!

Ok today I let Heshy loose in the house as a treat and some enrichment since its been so hot outside and I can not put her in her play area in the yard . She started to play with the cat toys when my Mom came in the liveing room Heshy jumped out of the cats tower wanting to play footies with me Mom which at fisrt scared the liveing crap out of her ( still laughing ) Mom jumped and scream and Hershy went into a crazy war dance to funny. Anyway then Mom started to play with her they where chasing each other up and down living room. . ( this is the same person who swore ferrets are in the rat family and would not go n near her since I had her) So after both where tired (lol) Mom says Wow she like our cat .plays in the same ways . So I ran with it and said a little lie... Yes Mom ferrets are kind in the cat family , they eat the same things in the wild too, But with ferrets you dont have to worry about them leaving a mouse or a bird at the door for you as a present ( our cat always leaves presents for Mom at her bedroom door ). .. But you dont call Puma a rat (our cat) . She agreed then said but you still are not buying mice and storing them in the freezers .. long story short her opinion is changing and all from a simple war dance . With paitence, persistance and continue educating as well as those funny moments we have a chance to change anyones opionon or feeling's about ferrets.
