So I've been calling a couple vets to try to get some Revolution or fleas and heartworms. I call this one place, this woman answers and she says "The label says not to for rabbits, and ferrets are pretty similar to rabbits, so the vet advises not to use it for your pet." WTF?

Well my vet must be really bad because she has my "rabbit-like" ferrets on revolution.

I've had them on Revolution before, but I can't find the place I bought it from. They sold it individually and without an exam fee. I'll probably just buy online again, from Petshed.com. A 3 month supply is $35 and shipping is $6. My vet is really expensive got flea meds, so I was hoping to ind that place again. But I called everywhere and I cannot find it.

I buy it through www.drsfostersmith.com , once I order they fax a prescription confirmation to my vet, she signs it and faxes it back, and they ship it straight to me, she doesn't charge us anything to write the prescription. We did buy our first dose through her because we had bugs and didn't want to wait for the shipping, and that allowed her to weigh the pets to determine proper dosing (since we use the big dog one and a syringe to share it), but even for that she just charged us $16 for the meds. I keep the extra in the fridge, it takes us close to a year to go through the package.

$16 for how many tubes?
I like petshed because you don't need a prescription to buy it, so I don't need to see a vet and pay the visit fee.

She charged us $16 for one of the large (45-80lb) dog tubes, which lasted us 2 months divied up between 3 cats and 4 ferts. The link in my first post sells a 3 pack for $48, which lasts our household about 6 months...the vet gave us a test tube with a rubber top that keeps the leftovers airtight since we only use half of one every month and it's in an alcohol base that will dry out otherwise...I just dump the whole dog dose in and syringe out individual doses, then stick it in the fridge til next month. I figure $8/month for 7 animals was a pretty good deal, and I don't dose during the winter months since fleas aren't an issue then.

I actually didn't know the dog formula was safe on ferrets. I was always told to use the cat version. Do you know what dosing you use per lb? That sounds like a great deal. I can get the dog version on petshed.com for about $55, and if one tube lasts you two months for all those animals, it would last me forever I usually get the 5-15 lb cat version, and my vet told me to just split between the two ferrets (about 2 lbs each).

My vet has our kiddos on Revolution, and I'll tell you, I think it works like a dream as far as fleas go. Ferrets and rabbits are in no way similar. Argh. lol We split the cat version between two just like you, Jackie.

I agree. I've used it on all my cats, dogs, ferrets, and I've never once had a problem with fleas. No reactions ever, either. I definitely trust it as much as you can trust a drug. Yeah, I was a bit confused how she could think they're similar... Rabbit eats hay, ferret eats... rabbit?

My vet told me that the revolution formula is the same for dogs and cats, but this is NOT the case for frontline or advantage so those have to be the cat formula. If you scroll partway down this link (http://www.drugs.com/vet/revolution.html), it discusses recommended dosages (mg/lb) and shows the potency (mg/mL) for the different sized doses available...personally, I let my vet do the math for me because I want to be sure I'm not under- or over-dosing, and I like to stick with the dose size I can go through within a couple months of opening because I think otherwise the potency will degrade.

Thanks for the link. I wouldn't dose anything without consulting my vet first. Talking to him over the phone doesn't cost me $40 for a visit, though.
Good point about using it within a couple months. I appreciate the information!
