Our ferret nation finally arrived this afternoon. The box was left at the rental office. When my husband went to pick it up the office person told him that the owner doesn't allow ferrets. My husband, who doesn't know the difference between any small pets, told the woman that it was for a HAMSTER , because we were afraid the cat would get into a smaller cage and the handle to this one would prevent cats from getting to the hamster. According to my husband, all she said was "ok". Now I'm holding my breath wondering if they're going to come inspect our apartment for ferrets. 6 months ago, I called and asked about ferrets and the staff person told me that as long as it was in a cage, they didn't count it toward the pet limit (2 which we're already over since we have 2 cats and 1 dog). 2 weeks before we got our additions I called and got 3 different answers - what are ferrets, yes they're allowed since they live in cages, no they're not. They told me they would call me. They never did so I (wrongly) assumed it wouldn't be a problem. One thing is for sure. I would rather move than give them up.

I agree with taratee. No, I don't like to lie and yes, it's somewhat unethical but personally I think it's best to do so "by omission". Katt's set-up for where she's not allowed to have ferrets is frankly ingenious (if not paranoid, but hey, I'd be paranoid and do all the same things she is). You can always tell them a friend is giving you her chinchilla and you bought a ferret nation because you couldn't get the critter nation and everyone talks about how great these cages are, blah, blah, blah.

Katt, might I say that you are awesome?? It kinda reminds me of when I was dating my husband. He had 3 cats and was only allowed 2 so he stashed 1 at my place for a few days while they did maintenance at his. I'm definitely going to try this idea, and no, I have absolutely no qualms about lying to the rental office in order to keep my fuzzies. I've already had to lie to a new neighbor because he saw my husband carrying in carefresh (for their dig box) and started chatting about how he could give up a fresh bag because he had to give up his ferrets in order to move here. I told him we had guinea pigs. We're discussing what our options are about where the little ones can go if maintenance does come in. My husband wants to set them up in a closet for a few hours, since they'd prolly sleep through it anyway. I think I might have a friend who might be willing to keep them for a day or so if it came down to that. I am also planning on creating a cover for the cage from black cloth that will keep it covered and nice and dark for them anyway. Thanks so much for the ideas. I feel much better about this whole thing. Oh, and from now on they'll be going to the vet's office in a gym bag.

Next time you get a place where they give you permission to keep ferrets, GET IT IN WRITING and make the landlord sign and date it - you need to sign and date it as well.
I would get the followin put nto the contract - 1. if the policy should change, the landlord must give you at least three month's notice to either rehome the ferrets or find a new place. If the need to move terminates the lease prematurely, you will be refunded the full amount for the for the reaming time on the lease that you will not be living there.

To put it simpy- lie! Normally, I do not condone lying in any way, shape, or form. When it concerns my pets, however, I'd do it without even thinking Why on earth would you tell them "ferret nation" when they wouldn't even have a clue what it was?

Yeah, I definitely had "ferret" signed and dated into the lease by the manager. And she was "forgetting" to do that at first, but my dad was there. Apparently, someone in my complex has three according to another office worker--another guy had a dog on the second floor and dogs are only allowed on the first floor. Its always good when you are in with maintainance/staff enough for them to "not notice" certain things.
And Katt's set-up is amazing. Definitely worth a though.

I didn't. The cage arrived when we weren't home and the UPS guy dropped it off at the front desk, like all packages (he ignored the note to leave at front door). Unfortunately, the box front shows the cage, ferrets and ferret nation from Midwest - it didn't come in a plain box, it's the actual box you'd pick up at the store. We moved here 3 years ago, but I only thought about getting ferrets 6 months ago because that's when my husband finally gave in. He used to think they were smelly and would do nothing but nip and scratch him (he had a bad experience with a ferret at a shelter when he was in college). I'm really nice to the maintenance guys here. We always chat when they come fix something. I know them all by name and greet them, offer cookies that sort of thing. So far, they've been gracious enough to ignore the "extra" cat hanging around.

Mine came the same way. Its actually a pain, because you are lucky if the box hasn't been trashed by a forklift. UPS is bad for not following delivery instructions too. :/ I usually have to go pick up my packages from their service center.

My Ferret Nation 142 recently came the same way and was dropped off at the office. They could see the name, could see the ferrets on the box, everything - but they didn't say a word to us.
Yours shouldn't have either, because it's none of their business what you buy with your money, for all they knew it could have been a gift for someone else.

Lol! I did the same thing when we were apartment dwellers, if the landlord came over the snake went in the closet or under the bed, the iguana went in a different closet, with a blanket over the "empty cage" and the ferrets went to my sister's house and cages hidden. Luckily our landlord was a bit of a pain pill popper and rarely with the program, we did end up buying a house when we had to move out of there though, just couldn't find another apartment that would take pets that wasn't a nasty rat trap.
