So Craven started losing hair and mounting the others around Sept. He's been on lupron monthly since then with no reaction, is it worth trying a melatonin implant as well? My vet doesn't use melatonin normally, at least she's never brought it up but I'm just wondering what we can try if Lupron is doing nothing for him, although my other adrenal is responding great.

I found that the melatonin worked great for Mad Max and he didn't respond to the Lupron. Another that might be worth trying especially if you can get it is the deslorin implant. I find treating adrenal very much a hit and miss endeavor, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. ciao

I second Heathers comments. SO far, the Des is working on my 4 better than lupron and/or melatonin. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my luck holds out!

So the melatonin is a shot like the lupron? Injected the same? I give the shots myself, my vet is several hours away so I will call tomorrow or Wed to order more and try to get a call back from her to see about melatonin or the possibility of getting deslorin shipped in, I might have to print that sticky info on it out and send it to her.

Melatonin come in 2 forms: oral and an implant (like deslorelin). The implant that gets injected under the skin between the shoulers/scruff area. I never used the implants - but I know they help a lot of ferrets grow fur. The oral melatonin was completely ineffective on my kids because it has to be given at a certain number of hours prior to darkness (a really inconvenient time of day.) There's quite a bit of debate as to whether ot not the meltonin can sloww the progressof adrenal diease. In general, it tends to be viewed as a drug that helps with symptoms, and it may not slow disease progression at all. (But we don't realy know that much about any of the treatments -jennifer

It seems like that's really all any of the drugs do is possibly slow the cancer and help with symptoms, I just hate seeing poor Craven half hairless because I'm sure it's only going to get worse and itchy to boot, if it'll make him more comfortable I'm willing to try. Can you use melatonin in pill form? Or just the liquid if you are going with daily dose? I've never seen the liquid for sale, just the pill to help you sleep which I take on occansion. We are home pretty much nonstop so that may work for us actually.

I use the liquid. I found the pill was too difficult to get them to take and guarantee that they were getting the whole pill. Liquid also absorbs much better than the pills. A ferret does poorly with subliqual administration. I happen to be at home at that very difficult time of day and have found it to work fantastically, but...you have to follow this regime all the time if you're going to get it to work ciao
