About time, huh? Midwest is shipping the new shelves at last. They're not replacing old shelves for free this time, but so far new ones can be purchased by calling them. Photographic evidence --> www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=17473There's a larger view if you scroll down the "styles" insets. I've seen them, and they look pretty good to me. Most shelf covers should still work with the new pans. The shelves themselves connect to the cage body the same way, but it seems like without that slight upwards slant. And now you can just lift the pan out without taking down the whole shebang. I haven't been using shelves in my FN setup, but I'm tempted to put one in just to see if the boys can get up to any mischief with it.

The old shelves were a flat piece of plastic inside a metal frame. Because of how the ramps hooked on, there were spaces around the edge where little toes could get caught, and a few incidents of broken legs. That's why shelf covers are recommended... that and they make it comfier and look nicer.
If you buy a new FN from the internet, it should have the new shelves, since most places will have it shipped straight from Midwest. But I think there are stickers on the new boxes, so if you get one from a store, be sure to double-check for them.

If you DO buy from midwest, I would ask if the cage has the new has the latest shelve design. I would not want to assume anything. They may have old inventory. If I had to make a bet, I would guess that midwest sold all their old stock introduced the new shelves as soon as the last old version was out the door. I had one of the original first model sets of shelves... my smallest got her toe stuck between the shelf frame and the plastic insert. I was there when this happened. I immediately came up with a fix for this problem (this is posted in the cage section.) I'm not sure of this, for all cases, but for the cases I've been aware of, the problem involved the shelf frame and the plastic inserts - not the ramps. BUT, this does NOT mean others have not had problems with ramps! If you do buy a cage that has old model shelves, ramp covers and shelf covers are readily available from Rose German: Little Feet Ferret Retreat (LFFR on ebay). Rose also has an online store so you can select the color you want and order from her store. You'll want 2 sets so you can put clean covers on when the dirty ones need washing. Most people I know are so happy with the covers that they have no plans to upgrade their shelves. My brats will not set foot on a covered ramp. they simple jump onto or off of the shelf....Just try to remain asleep when my big boy thunks down from a shelf in the middle of the night Also remember, there is no such thing as a completely safe cage. Ferrets have been injures/died in other cages as well. Midwest just has the visibily due the the popularity of their FN cages -jennifer
