so, i know at least some of you guys feed live, so i have some questions. and a story.
i tried to give my girls a mouse last night, the mouse is about 2 weeks old, so it was moving around quite abit. they were horrible. just a few bites here and few bite there. i ended up having to kill it, and in tears. but could it be that they weren't hungry and that's why it was horrible? or are first hunts just bad to begin with? should it be better if they're hungry? i don't know if age helps any, but Belle is 2 in September and Pebbles is just over 3 months.
any helps would be helpful. sorry if this is on the wrong board.

IME, some ferrets are natural hunters, and some dont have a clue.
Jakes first mouse hunt wasnt clean, I didnt have to kill it myself but it took a while for him to figure it out. Emmett wanted nothing to do with the mouse at all. I think the mistake I made was to give it to him when he wasnt super hungry. The next time I tried feeding a live mouse, the day before I have them a REALLY tiny meal, just a light 'snack'. Then, the next morning he was really hungry and killed the mouse very quickly. Emmett never learned to hunt, yet. Im still trying, but he hasnt quite figured it out yet, Im not sure if he ever will. He will eat them once Jake kills them though, so at least he is getting the extra variety of meat.

Captain Jack is like that. He loves to eat the mice, but they have to be dead. He's a lousy hunter and an even worse killer. I just don't bother any more. He's come a long way, I figure that he doesn't have to kill his dinner, someone else can do that for him. There's no reason to make a mouse suffer. ciao

If they can't kill a mouse they certainly can't catch a

Sounds like they are just bad hunters, I have one that took to it great, and every other one doesn't have a clue. I did add a male last year that is decent at killing mice but more interesting in eating one while the rest run around. The rest of the crew get prekilled unless they are pinkies and even those they weren't great at killing at first but you can't CO2 pinkies and it doesn't seem any kinder to freeze them IMO.

yea, freezing them just doesn't seem kinder. i think it was because she wasn't hungry. Pebbles last night took to it great. it took her a bit, under a minute to figure it out though. so she's getting there. Belle was way more interested in the drain/drain stopper, than the mouse running around. the mouse went under her and she didn't even notice. i was Loling.
