A couple of years ago, a study was performed in Spain to determine the effect of virgin olive oil on helicobacter pylori, which is closely related to h. mustelae. H. mustelae causes nearly all ulcers in ferrets, and it can be difficult to clear up due to resistance to antibiotic. The study demonstrated that that virgin olive oil has antibacterial properties that may help to prevent and/or treat H. Pylori infections in humans. In vivo studies should be performed to determine results in humans. However, since approximately 1/4 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil given to ferrets daily can be used for hairball prevention, it certainly won't hurt as a possible preventive or treatment therapy for H. mustelae infections. Please spread the word - even if it helps a little bit, it's worthwhile - ulcers are really nasty. -jennifer
