Hey guys, what are some good sources of organ other than: chicken liver (and heart - technically a muscle) and gizzards? Koda gets whole mice relatively often, but I still feel like he needs more organ meat. I'm running low on my meat stash and will need to restock here soon. I want to get in a little more organ this time around...

I use chicken liver, beef liver, pork liver, and beef kidney. I would use more but thats all I can find in stores around here. Bailey(dog) & my ferrets eat all those, but the ferrets get whole mice also.

Check out oriental stores. Went to one today and they had everything from chicken liver to pork kidney, to spleen.
Walmart also sells big things of beef kidney.

Just to let you know- both heart and gizzard are muscle meats. Organs are any gland in the body that secretes. Liver, kidney, spleen, thymus, lung, brain, pancreas, pituitary, and many others. Some get dried lung and give that as treats, to supplement the usual liver and kidney you can get in a store.

Hmmm...I am not sure if my grocery store carries Kidney. I will have to look. I don't even know what gizzard is as far as anatomy goes, so that is good to know! haha Thanks! I will have to see what the oriental store nearby has. I am hoping the food I have lasts until finals are over, then I can go stock up and fill my freezer with little serving bags again haha

Gizzards are part of a bird. They aid in digestion.

Oh...right... Thanks! Ok, so I went to the Asian market and this is what I found. Of the following, which foods are ok and which are not? Pork chitterlings pork hocks pork skin with meat/skin with fat beef oxtails pork ears pork feet pork uteries pork stomach cow stomach? (I don't remember if they had that or not) Pork brains beef bile beef tendon scalded tripe (it was like a grey/white color - not the fluorescent white of the "bible tripe") chicken feet beef tongue beef blood pork blood beef kidneys (I bought a pack of these) Also, what about feathers if I but a whole quail from my rat lady?

Pork chitterlings-- pork hocks--bone's probably too hard pork skin with meat/skin with fat--cut in thin strips, fun to play with and probably good for skinny little ferts--skin's usually tough though, fats good for them beef oxtails--good chew pork ears--good if not smoked but again that skin is usually tough.great for dogs pork feet--my dogs won't have anything to do with these pork uteries--can they really sell this? if so good if your little ones will eat them-- full of nutrients pork stomach--probably bleached, if so not worth the money cow stomach? (I don't remember if they had that or not)--again because of health issues tripe can only be sold on the open market bleached, not worth anything to your little ones. Buy only if it's green--and you think your ferret smelled bad Pork brains--excellent if your little ones will eat it. One of my students feeds this on a regular basis as part of her organ meats beef bile--this is a remedy I don't think I would feed this on a regular basis beef tendon--good teeth cleaners, I don't know if the ferrets would like it or not scalded tripe (it was like a grey/white color - not the fluorescent white of the "bible tripe")--no good chicken feet--awesome source of calcium, my guys like them as treats beef tongue--excellent source of meat beef blood--I've used it for sick ferts but don't normally feed except what comes off their meat -- black tarry stools is a result so don't scare yourself if you use this. pork blood--same beef kidneys (I bought a pack of these)--excellent source of proteins and trace...use sparringly as organ meat--caution stools will be black and tarry if used. This isn't a problem, just a caution so you know, it's the amount of blood being consumed. I don't want you to scare yourself into thinking that your little one is ill. That's my input, if anyone else can add to this please do. A lot of this I can't get my hands on either at all or on a regular enough basis to feed this. ciao

Oh...right... Thanks! Also, what about feathers if I but a whole quail from my rat lady? Feathers aren't a problem. My ferrets get whole quail,I just clip off the wings and legs (they don't eat those). They will pluck off most of the feathers. So to cut down on the mess I'll pluck off about half the feathers and take out the intestines. Sometimes you'll see clusters of eggs inside and the ferrets eat those up real quick, Whole quail is a real favourite for my ferts.
