About 5 seconds ago I got an idea to make the entire lower half of my FN142 into a dig box by making a large cardboard box without a lid, filled with shredded paper that I could slide into the lower half of their FN. Then using a section of their new black drainage tube as a ramp from the dig box to the upper half of the cage. The reason I want the box to cover half the cage is so most of the paper stays in the box when they play.
This may sound dumb, but could they get lost in that much paper? I worry they wouldnt be able to find their way back out. Any suggestions?
I've been to sick to let them play lately and I have tried everything else I can think of for in cage entertainment but they are still mopey. btw I have 2 girls and 1 boy sharing the FN

Personally? I think it's a great idea! In mine, the lower half is used for litter box, and hammocks for those to lazy to crawl back up to the upper level following Upper half is eating/sleeping/playing. But I have 4 to an FN. You may have to switch out what's in the box every week or so though, or they'll simply get bored with it. As for them getting lost, why not cut a hole and attach a 4-6" tube to the side as well? That way you KNOW they can get out with no problem. Not that I think they'd have much trouble anyway.

Unless you have old ferts and/or sick ferts, you'll fnd that ferts are very good problem solvers. You can always set up the dig box on a Saturday and oberve them over a weekend. I've also found that al a fert needs to do is be shown or see something once - and they have it down pat Train one fert and the rest pick up the trained behavior through observation Fair warning - the more you challenge their minds, the more capable they become -jennnifer

If you are worried I would say to set it up with nothing in it at first, just he box and tube so they get used to getting out. Then start adding stuff. A few inches at first and then more once you feel comfortable that they can get out. But I dont think you have to worry. They are really good at this kind of stuff

thanks guys. I'll probably set it up on Wednesday when I'm off work. I'm so excited to see their reactions. I'm going to try everything you guys suggested. I'll also post pics
