Does anyone have any advice for brushing ferret teeth? I have the finger brushes and paste and am just unsure what to expect. ;D

Back when I actually had to brush my ferrets teeth, I used to use gauze, put a bit of toothpaste on it, scruff them, and gently rub it over their teeth from back to front. Yes, I did get bitten a few times, but did it anyway . That's why I love the raw meaty bone diet. I haven't needed to brush them since! Their teeth get clean from the "flossing" action of chewing meat, tendon, and crunching bone.

I've never had to brush ferrets' teeth. I do give a close going over when they're first turned in, and then continue to do a monthly check. The raw diet is a wonderful "toofies" cleaner. ciao

I brush my ferret's teeth, but its just because I am so obsessive lol. They eat raw and whole prey and they have sparkling white teeth, they really don't need it, but I can't help myself The best way to brush a ferret's teeth is to have someone hold (scruff) the ferret while you brush. The new 2009 Ferrets USA Magazine (available at most petshops) has a great pictorial of how to brush your ferret's teeth. Then again you could always try a natural diet so you don't have to worry about tooth brushing and we can certainly help you there.

A little late, I know, but wanted to chime in.
I had trouble using the finger toothbrushes, so we use q-tips. (the ones with cardboard "pipes" instead of plastic). It is easier if you can have someone scruff the ferret while you brush.
If this is the first time, they may be a bit intimidated. You may have to just do a quick one. eventually they will know you aren't trying to hurt htem.

just want to add my thanks for this thread. Since my two haven't gotten into munching on bones yet, their teeth are starting to get yellow and I was wondering how to go about brushing. How often should you do this? (Sounds like I will have to wait until I can nab my daughter and get her to help)
