I think there should be a new section labeled "Other Animals" or something like that where we can discuss how we feed our other animals.

Well on some level I sort of agree, but also think it may deter from the original design of the forum - in that it is geared for ferrets only.
THere are plenty of roums designed for "holistic feeding" of dogs, cats, horses, even fish.
I thin if we offered such a section it might lead to splintering of the forum. Many of us DO have other animals and take a natural approach with them too - but is it necessary to approach it here on this forum? IMO, no, not as an actual section. Maybe in casual remarks or as comparative replies while discussing ferret natural care but not as its own entity.
Cheers, Kim

We already have a section like this, well, atleast for dogs and cats. It can be found in the "odds and ends" section it is a subforum there. Here is the link: holisticferret.proboards80.com/index.cgi?board=dogcatWhile this IS a Holistic FERRET forum, I do feel having a small area set aside to discuss natural feeding for other pets is imporant, that being said there is a wide variety of forums out there that specifically address natural feeding for dogs and cats and I encourage people to check those out as well.

I didn't even think about it like that, I understand completely. I just got a hedgehog (rescue,in bd shape) and I'm having a hard time finding out how to feed it anything but kibble! There seems to be no set plan like the BARF model for ferrets.

I thought about expanding the section for dogs and cats to include other animals too, but I figured it would be best to keep the topics on this site geared towards the top 3 domestic carnivores: ferrets (of course), and dogs and cats.
What i would do is look up info on what a hedgehog would naturally eat and then go from there. Here is what wikipedia says Hedgehogs eat:
"Although traditionally classified in the now abandoned order Insectivora, hedgehogs are not exclusively insectivores but are almost omnivorous. Hedgehogs feed on insects, snails, frogs and toads, snakes, bird eggs, carrion, mushrooms, grass roots, berries, melons, and watermelons. In fact, berries constitute a major part of an Afghan Hedgehog's diet in early spring after hibernation. The hedgehog is occasionally spotted after a rainstorm foraging for earthworms. Although forest hedgehogs, most well-known to Europeans, are indeed mainly insectivores, this is not necessarily true for other species.
In areas that have hedgehogs in the wild, they are often welcomed as a natural form of garden pest control. Many people leave food out to attract hedgehogs. Although hedgehogs are lactose-intolerant, they will eagerly consume cheese, milk, and dairy products, causing illness.[citation needed] The common pet hedgehog (Four-toed Hedgehog) can however have a small portion of cottage cheese as a dietary supplement. Dog and cat food are better than dairy, but both are often too high in fat and too low in protein. It is best to leave out only a small treat, leaving them plenty of appetite for the pests in one's garden."

Hi Giuli As we have your site on on ours to send ferret people to you, why don't you make use of our natural feeding site for the rest of the furkids. It won't take away from people discussing their other pets here but it will take the pressure off the forum. We cover all pets and their natural rearing, not just the more carnivorous types. We have just under 2000 members and that adds up to a lot of various furchildren that are covered. Just a thought, I can give you our addy if you want to try this. ciao
