Hi!
Xrays would not be able to determine any kind of bacterial/parasitic infection. This would require a fecal test.
X-rays would show bone and organ placement/size
This would include things like -
* a bone lodged in the throat/stomach
* heart size (as in dialated cargiomyopathy, which would be very unlikely in a young ferret)
* some lung issues(possibly pneumonia?)
* Here's a BIG relief - organ dsplacement in the chest area could be juvenile lymphoma. This is typically not detcted until the organs are dislaced by a large mass.
If your ferret is almost better....the problem is improving, right???
* heart worm would be getting worse as the worm grows in the heart. BUT KEEP YOUR FERT AWAY FROM SKEETERS ANYWAY!!!
* congeial defect of the heart/lungs....would not be improvng and something that severe would most likely be detected with a stethascope. (irregular heart beat, murmer, wheezing, etc.)
* Cancers would not be improving. Again, any likely mass in the chest /abdoinal area arge enough to affect the heart/lungs would be visible on an x-ray.
Here are some things to consider....
* intestinal bacteria and/or parasites may improve if the ferrets system adjusts to the prescence of the "invader" the immune system may know down the poputation of parasites or bacteria. And there will probably be timeswhn the "gut cooties" flare back up from time to time.
* many cooties (even giardia and helicobacter) are found in ferrets in small amounts as a natural thing - sometimes the immune system has trouble keeping the population of cooties under control (during times of stress?). SOmetimes, extra amounts or new cooties can be introduced - such as through tap water, exposure to other animals, etc.
SO, here are some quetions???
Is coughing his only symptom?
How are his stools??? Any more diarrhea? (even occasional?
How is his weight?
How is hs activity level?
Does exercise aggrevate his condition?
Does he get tired very easily during exercise?
Any dark/tarry stools?
Did you change laundry detergent, anything in his environment?
The things above may provide us some clues .
