ok we are upgrading our cage woohooo we are getting a marshalls here's why and would like your thoughts on the cage also
1. the cage they are in now is too small for 8 ferrets and hard to get in and clean.
2. like i was told it has wire floors.
3. not enough shelf space for them to lay on.
4. we cant leave the playpen up cause the bars are SQ and badger climbs up and gets out of the playpen.
now what are your thoughts on a marshalls cage do u like them if not why if so why. now when we get it we are going to take out there small shelfs and add 4 in there that go all the way across so there is going to be lots of room our friends who have 13 ferrets have done this and it looks awesome and then we can get towles and blankets etc and put down as we do down with carpet and fang drags it down to the bottom. thanks for your info.

Everyone here and other ferret owners will probably tell you to get a ferret nation..me on the other hand went a different route and here is why..I saw a ferret nation set it up..to me for the size of the cage I would want it to have more shelves..my guys love running up and down their cage chasing eachother...second its not very eye appealing and has a cold look to it. Everyone claims its easy to clean and is built to last.
I have a marshall townhouse. I think if you have 8 ferrets you should go with the marshall penthouse. It's way bigger and has a easy slide out bottom. Both models have deep bottoms which is awesome because my ferrets only use the bottom to potty which has their litter box. Nothing comes flying out which was my fear with the ferret nation. There are tons of shelves and ramps to provide plenty of different levels for your ferts. I love my cage and have no problems with it.

I've got an old style Marshall Mansion ( the green one). Its quite large but not big enough for 8 ferrets to be comfortable in. Three at the most.
I'll admit I am not one in favor of caging ferrets. Mine are all free roam, except for meal time now ( I got tired of finding stashed raw treasures from 6 ferrets) and I recommend free roam for the snctity of your ferret's minds.
I do understand that not every ferret can be afforded free roam and therefore a cage is necessary. The biggest cage is never big enough.
My cage was one of two free when I adopted four ferrets. This old style Marshall Mansion has two levels, but not separable from each other. The "flooring" is wire which is NOT advisable for healthy ferret feet. Of course slippery plastic floors aren't ideal either. Coverings are needed to offer your ferret's toes protection and stability to their limbs.
I think the newer mansions offer solid shelving.
I've seen the Ferret Nations and they are pretty nice cages. They can be set up vertically or horizontally (which eliminates the possibility of falls) - with numerous ferrets in one cage, I highly recommend a horizontal set up. The ferret nation allows closing between the two levels, so you could pair off friendly ferrets and keep out marauders.
Even still I wouldn't put any more than 4 ferrets in one Ferret Nation cage.
With 8 ferrets I can't see anything less than two cages regardless whether you get a Marshall or a Ferret Nation.
Probably not the best news you wanted to hear, but its just my observations.
Good luck with your choices! Cheers, Kim

I am one of the FN folks that Meli mentioned. haha I love the FN! I also kinda like the Martin's cage as well as the Quality cage, which is simialr to the Martin's cage, & it is made in Portland, OR, which is closer to me. Most of the rescues I know of either use Martin's or Quality cages, for multiple ferrets. I am working on building playpens & cages simialr to the Martins/Quality cages, althought it may take me a while to get them complete. We're focusing on fixing up the house to sell, & move further south, so other projects are kinda on hold for now.

Also with my marshall townhouse, I can divide it into two seperate cages and I think for a cage its size 4 would be the advisable number.

I have a FN nation cage. You can see my set up here: holisticferret.proboards80.com/index.cgi?board=cage&action=display&thread=201i love it becuase it is easy to clean and also with our set up if we needed to we would have 4 different cages. the ladder ramps have a hook that will close the hole so that they cant leave the level that they are on. We have fabric over part of ours so it does look less cold. But i would keep it for the one fact that it is sooooooooooo easy to clean. this is our 3rd type of cage and i will never go back. we are getting ready to add two more sections to the cage so that our now 10 ferrets have more room.

thanks everyone for the info that means alot to me wow love how u have the 2 cages hooks together mmmm i bet we could do that with our new one and old one so they could have 2 to go in just make the old one better with diff shlelfs tyvm for the idea we dont let our ferrets free roam cause we also have birds and oso loves to make the quaker fly lmao but if they got into the cage with the mayers we dont do who would win that and dont want anything bad to happen to anyone of them plus we live in an older mobile home and we dont want them to get into anything if we get into a house u bet they will have run of a few rooms just not where the birds are. see we want to be able to have there playpen hooked up to there cage also so they can come in and out but now badger can climb up the bars on the old cage and get out.

I, too, am a ferret nation person. I have never had anything come flying out at me and with some cute bedding it no longer has the "cold" look referred to. I have a two story and have kept 5 in it comfortably. For 8, I think a 3 story would suffice just fine. Of course, this is assuming they don't actually "live" in the cage, but just have to sleep there and such. As was said previously - no cage is big enough for ferrets to "live" in. Mine always went back to the caqe to sleep, and that was when I'd close up and let the dogs back in. When the ferrets woke back up, the dogs went out and ferrets came out to play. It worked well that was, and they spent most of their waking time out of the cage, provided I was home. With small kids and other animals, it's not feasible for us to free roam either. I hope to have a room for them to have roam of eventually, though!
