So I work at a pet store, as a cashier. Well, I was ringing someone out, and he happened to notice that I had some cuts on my hands. They were from a ferret I had been playing with at another pet store He asked, "What kind of pet do you own that did that you to?" Because I was spacing a bit, I simply answered "Oh, a ferret." This mans' whole demeanor changed!!! He instantly made a noise of digust and began to talk about his dislike of ferrets. He then asked if I owned one, and I replied "No, but I'm very interested in getting one." He ranted to me about How they were "nasty little creatures" and so on. Finally, I looked at him dead on and said "I believe, sir, that this is a matter of PERSONAL OPINION." After that, he took his things and left. But it left me a bit upset! I thought it was very rude! And it really seemed that, to me, he'd never really spent much time around a ferret, to accurately have a realistic opinion of them. But more than that, it was rude of him to judge MY opinions in such a way. I DO NOT go around and judge peoples' choice of pets, and I think it was so, SO uncalled for! The other cashier was alittle angry with the man, also. He was THAT obnoxious! How often do you all deal with this sort of attitude? What are your general replies? I was so annoyed, because I instantly thought of this site, and all the funny and heart warming stories, and thought "WHO is this man to call them nasty little creatures, what does HE know?" Thanks for listening to me rant!!!

Not a problem, and "been there, done that" Generally if they start to rant, I simply tell them, "I should warn you- I've got 9, and am absolutely passionate about them" Normally that stops them dead If it doesn't, I've been known to tell them "That's extremely rude of you", and walk away I refuse to tolerate someone being rude to me any more Mind you- in your position, you can't exactly do that. I think you handled that jerk in the best way you could have, personally.

Hmm, what a "delightful" man. Customers like those are why I'd never make it as a cashier. I think you handled it well, considering you have to be polite to some extent. The man sounds like he has NO idea about what it's like to own a ferret. They are amazing, beautiful, curious creatures that make great pets. I probably wouldn't have been able to hold my tongue.

Sherry- Hahaha! I wish I could have told them off like that, but I need this job!! I just wish one of our other managers had been there, because he had 8 at one point (he's down to 3 now!) I can only imagine how irate he would have been!! Jackie- I think in the situation you would have handled it well, too! At the time, I know I was thinking, "Don't do anything stupid, you need this paycheck!!!!"

Yeah, that whole "needing the paycheck" thing kind of puts a damper on it

Haha I know how that goes! I work in a petstore too. When people hear I have ferrets and rats they just get all weird. Ah well, their loss I suppose

I get that all the time, I just pretty much smile and nod so that I don't get myself all worked up. Between the ferrets, pitbulls, and raw feeding it's pretty safe to say that the general population thinks I'm a wacko whose children will never live to see adulthood... It's only us normal people who are open minded, understand that it's not the breed (or species) but how they are raised, and want what's best for our furbabies that understand. The closed mindedness kills me, I actually had a neighbor the year before last that called the local news channel and told them that I was training my dogs for fighting when she heard that we fed them raw...I came home one evening to find a news crew waiting for me in my yard!

How often do you all deal with this sort of attitude? What are your general replies? I hear this often when I tell people I own ferrets. Apparently there have been some pretty bad cases of evil ferrets (only because they had not been treated properly). So far every friend I've met has thought they were evil, as well as the bf. For the bf, I had him come over a few times and he ended up falling in love with Bonkers. Then when I moved in, we bought Booth, then Lincoln, then Riley. Hahaha. As for strangers, I just tell them that most the time they are sweet creatures, but it depends on how they are brought up.

I'm past the point of even telling people I have ferrets or feed raw unless it's someone I know really well. I always kick the bf when he mentions raw to people or the vets we see. I just don't like to bother anymore. I'm always happy to talk to someone open minded if they ask but I've found most people don't like to be told anything they haven't heard before. Man fears what he does not know.

I generally don't mind what people think, and more often than not, don't pay attention, either But I was taken back by his rudeness!

I was shocked actually when I took my ferrets to the vet, when I told them I was switching to raw. They were actually like, "That's good! That will help prevent a lot of problems." Weird huh?
