I'm considering getting a kit from a local pet store. They are from Marshall Farms. I was wondering if anyone knows if Marshall has a guarantee that the kits don't have adv or if I should get them tested before bringing them home.

I wouldn't put much stock into any guarantees from Marshalls

The only thing that they'll likely guarantee would be congenital defects...there's no guarantee that a ferret cannot get exposed to ADV by somebody who walks into the pet store. In addition ADV may show no clinical siigns. -jennifer

Most pet stores have a 14 day guarantee, so you could get them and take them to the vet for a checkup. I mean, I know it is possible, but not too likely. Well, assuming you get it from a good pet store.

The thing is, that I just wouldn't have the heart to return a little ferret to a pet store if I took him to the vet and found out he had something. The store will send them back and Marshalls will euthanize them. So, it is a risk you take. But even a ferret from a breeder may come with latent problems. I have had several marshalls ferts. No problems with adv (knock wood). They usually start having health problems at around age 5.

A good number of mine came from the pet store. They were usually the ones they were getting ready to send back for non sale. All of them were healthy enough(barring earmites). The problem is if there is a problem your vet uncovers, the pet store insists on the ferret being examined by their "vet", which can take several weeks, before the ferret winds up going back to the farms for lab testing or euthanization.

Marshalls should provide an ear mite guarantee. Your new kit has ear mites or it's free.

Marshall's for sure doesn't guarantee against something like ADV. All four of mine (three of which I got as kits from a mom n pop place) have been ADV-free. That's not a guarantee, either, of course, just my experience with farm kits . Maybe you could try to research the rates of ADV in your area, whether it's a more prominent disease in your area or uncommon?

Talk to the pet store. They are the ones who could tell you for sure.
