We are new here and Lola came part of the family December 20, 2010.
We where told her birth date is October 1st, 2010.
I had no intention of buying a ferret when my youngest son, 12, and I walked into a local (30+ miles away) pet store to just "snoop." At the time she, Lola, was called "Monster." I said no. No pets. But I did follow Olie back to where the ferret was. She got really excited and of course I started to use my "goofy voice" and ohed and ahhed at her and I couldn`t help myself..I opened the cage. Now the store owners know me and my experience with animals so didn`t care..if she bite I wouldn`t get upset as i`ve given advise to other pet owners when i`ve been in there who bought kitties, pups and birds ( I had or have them all.)
Up my arm and into my jacket, down along my jacket arm and up and down the other. I gave her to Olie and said No. We don`t need a ferret. (although I already wanted her too.)
I left the store and called my husband. "Would you mind if we got a ferret?" He said he didn`t care..I would what I wanted anyways...
I said she would all of ours and she would be in doors in the rabbit cage (big) that for some reason I haven`t removed from the house even though it has been empty for a year. I told him what she did and he said.."if you feel right, get her."
Now if you know me and our family. We don`t just buy animals. It has to feel right and you have to except all responsibility for the new living being that comes to you.
By this time I had walked 2 blocks from the store. We have all types of animals, working cattle dogs, of course cattle, horses, Llamas, donkeys, cats, rabbit (rescue that loves her hutch outside) and chickens. Not to mention in spring where we even have humming bird Hoover right by our heads while we fill their feeders with food and Robin birds that take worms from your hands. What the heck do we need a ferret for?
But "Monster" reminded me of growing up in the Peace River area of Alberta. I was farm raised from generations of farmers and had a few "pet" weasels and even a martian as well as a few "pet"skunks. (I never got sprayed by any of them..although they would spray at my brothers! LOL)
I went back to the store. Olie was still playing with the ferret. I asked what we needed for her..the lady looked at me and asked did I know how to 'sex" them? I said no..was she a she? and I got a yes. Spayed and desented. Lola looked at me. I put her back in her cage. I tried to walk away. Her eyes wouldn`t let me. We bought some toys, food ( food suggested by the store), and "Monster" was put in a box for the 30+ mile ride back home. Olie and I said "Monster" was not her name and at the same time we both said lets call her LOLA!
Bernie my hubby looked at her when we got home. He had never seen a ferret before but has seen weasels and martians. He is also a multi generation farmer. He held her but was unsure if she would bite.
So Lola became the family Christmas present. We can not imagine our home without her in it. She loves and knows her name. If given the chance she will sleep in the bed and the house kitties and momma cat also adore her. Boy the stuff she is teaching the kittens! (they where born Sept 1st..which we know for a fact)
As we farm, thus work 24-7 one gets very tired but watching Lola and our son play and when he`s not home, Lola and the kitties play makes the days go by fast with a lot of laughter and joy. : )
With the other 3 kids grown up and gone (24, 25, 26), it is like having a new baby in the house. The joys and rewards of bringing this baby girl home far out weighs the dedication we have to give to her. We feel very blessed to of had her chose us to be her family.
This Lola and her big brother the first night home when she feel asleep in his arms and he in return fell asleep : )
