I'm hoping that the thin fur on Godiva's tail is from malnutrition (she had some flea's too)...she's been eating raw for two weeks now so it's too soon to tell...but she's about 2 years old or so judging from her teeth... YEah, the way she wrote I do believe that your right with the whole "my ferret doesn't look like that..." she sounded very uneducated and ignorant, with a touch of entitlement/my sh*t don't stink....

OMG this PI$$ES me off!! I already have an issue with vegetarians (I mean I agree I don't like the way commercial live stock is teared and if you don't like the taste of meat fine but to do it out of pure ignorance makes me mad) but THIS!? This is just SICK! They are killing their pets and patting themselves on the back for it. SMH! Poor poor animals. This makes them just as bad as the commercial meat producers. These animals are built to eat raw meat and nothing else! People are SO worried about being PC that they are killing their pets and making people take everything personal. GAW I can't stand it!!

Please keep this on topic. Generalizations only creates problems. Agreed this is a problem regarding diet but this isn't a general problem with vegetarians or vegans. We have a number of very strong vegetarians and vegans on board who are just as disgusted about feeding an animal the wrong diet. Let's please keep this whole thread in perspective. Everyone has a right to be angry a manufacturer of vegan diets for carnivore pets or for misinformation by people who should know better but please keep it there. ciao

I guess I just get mad for being called bad things myself because I enjoy meat. what ever floats your boat is fine with me, but yeah, bottom line is a veggie diet for a carnivore just doesn't seem right. The pets have no choice. I'm sorry again. Wont happen again, I just get heated over people forcing their choices on others, including animals. ETA: I should have been more clear as well. I didn't mean ALL vegetarians. Just "THOSE" people. You know what I mean, they don't HAVE to vegetarian, but people who think they know all of whats best for any and every one with no regard on science, study or real nature. People who think they know whats best based on their emotions and not fact. I'm sorry again.

I know... and it's been I guess a mantra lately... I can't save everyone I even have it sticked to my moniter... but like I told the chick, If I can help at least one ferret, help someone choose a better food, that it doesn't even have to be raw, than I did something good... I even gave her a list of grain free high quality kibbles... but I know advice that is not asked for is usually ignored and I probably wasted my time... I just wish that people like pet store employee's would be more educated in nutrition if they are going to advise someone... that people would do more research but I know better...ugh...

People will be people...I worked in a petstore for a while as a "Pet Care Specialist", we didn't carry ferrets but we had a variety of rodents, amphibians, herps, and fish I was in charge of during my shift. I don't feel the store provided enough training (it was basically read a pamphlet on each critter then teach yourself more IF you wanted to know more) but I tried to either know my animals or be able to point them towards someone more knowledgeable. What both cracked me up and made me sad was the large numbers of people that would come in, ask about the animals or for advice but would only believe us if it went along with the answer they already had in their head. Lots of people care and want what's best, but in the end I quit (among other reasons) because I felt there are just as many that don't want to hear it and I was starting to get cynical. I can't count how many times people would ask for ways to get rid of algae in their tanks, I'd talk about reducing lighting, adding live plants, and doing partial water changes to reduce the nitrates (algae food from fish waste) in their water. Then they'd say they'd heard of some chemical or fish they'd rather buy, I'd tell them the chems kill fish and are only a temporary fix and most plecos get 2 feet long, poop so much they add to the nitrate issue, and aren't fit for the 10-55 gallon aquarium they have, they'd respond with the same old b.s. that fish only grow to their tank size, ignoring anything I'd have to say about stunted growth and them killing the fish years before its time...or the goldfish in a bowl mantra. Goldfish can get 1-2' long and live over 20 years if properly cared for. In a bowl, they die within months but everyone acts like that's totally natural. Now I pick my battles...if someone makes a comment that sounds like they're interested, I'll give them as much info as they're willing to listen to, and if it looks like it'll turn into an argument I'll give them a reference to look up and drop it. Then it's their responsibility to take responsibility for their own knowledge and I know I've done my best.

Yeah I've become pretty jaded with trying to help people. As you say, if they seem open to learning and don't just want to hear what they think they already know to be right, I'm always willing to share what I know. But unfortunately in the majority of cases, people have no interest in being told ways to care for their pet that are either "too much work" (aka not the lazy short cut way) or go against what they heard God knows where.

yeah, I gave links for refrence...I probably sounded like some wacko but oh well....I said a prayer for the little one in hopes that it'll find a good furever home that will love, entertain, enrich, and feed it all the bests... I just hate it when I see adds on CL (which I really need to stay away from) with animals listed with craptastic foods...Ijust don't understand why people would choose to add an animal to thier family and not care for it properly. That;s how I ended up with two guinea pig's! I went to pick up some free fleece fabric and craft stuff and hear a raquet, she opened a small coatcloset door and there staring at me were the piggies! they were in horrible shape and she had been feeding them rabbit pellets, no hay, no veggies, no fruit.. they didn't even have a water bottle, heck they were free in the closet no cage or bedding! I just don't understand...don't get it...why do some people even bother to waste their money...ugh so disheartened right now....

As sad as it is, I think some people are just extremely immature when it comes to pets. They're like little kids. They want it, want it, want it and have all the best intentions. They get the pet(s) and they like it at first but then it gets boring/too much work so they keep the animal in the cage/garage/outside all the time without regard to the fact that it's a living being. Some people really don't think animals have feelings (for lack of a better word) or consider them unimportant enough that it doesn't matter.
It really does make you lose faith in the human race that some people can be so callous. At least there are still good people (as represented by the people on this forum) who care for their pets deeply and do everything they can to provide the best possible care and try to educate others along the way.

As the OPs first post said something along the lines of why people get animals they don't want to care for...I'm in total agreement.
Once a week, at least, there are ferrets for sale on Craigslist where I live. The reason is ALWAYS "I didn't realize how much time they took" or "I'm moving". I suppose if youre forced to move because you're being evicted or family just passed away that took care of the animals, then I can reason with that.
But the most recent one was "I'm going to college and can't have them in my dorm". UGH! You KNEW you would go to college, why would you get an animal! ><

vkp23, It's true. A few weeks ago I went into our church's bookstore and was absolutely disgusted to find that they were selling "The Vegan Dog" with our vegetarian and vegan cookbooks (something common in our church, I'm a vegetarian). No carnivorous animal should be subjected to this kind of ignorance and cruelty, it makes me so fed up.
