Some of you may have read that I had a scare with one of my ferrets choking a couple of nights ago. Thank heavens he's ok now, but I spoke to the emerg vet, and she told me you can perform a modified version of the Heimlich on ferrets. If they can't breathe, ie: gasping, pawing at mouth, and/or unconcious, lay them on their back, locate the diaphram at the bottom of the rib cage, and gently push in and up. If this doesn't dislodge the obstruction, do it a little more firmly, until it does. Immediately transport to the vet. There is also a link for animal first aid that includes the instructions. www.ferrets.org/First_Aid_Info.htm

My boyfriend actually did the ferret heimlich, as well as mouth to mouth, on one of our ferrets...
He saw him laying in the middle of the floor, not breathing, and his tongue was blue. He had choked on a piece of dog food, and the heimlich dislodged it and he recovered!
