I think I already know the answer to this, but it's not really the one I want.
I have 2 adults and 1 baby, about 4 months old. The adults have basically been raised on Meow Mix and I'm working on switching them over to better kibble and eventually raw. Unfortunately, the problem I've run into is that the adults can't tolerate high percentages of protein in their diets. Their gastrointestinal systems rebel and they get seedy poo and eventually very bad diarrhea and intestinal irritation.
The vet wants me to introduce raw very slowly, 1 tsp a day but I noted they get intestinal upset even with relatively high protein kibble. I've not even talking Evo, that was awful. Zupreem, which is 40% protein, and Ultimate 8-in-1 crunchy, which I think is 45% both upset their stomach. (Well, Spice's stomach. I can barely get Sugar to eat those and when I did for two meals of the day she ended up vomiting).
Well Pita, my baby, is finally getting along with everyone and they are now sleeping in the same cage. Unfortunately, because I have to leave Meow Mix in there for the other two, I've found she now has a junk food tooth for it. If she has the option she'll choose that over the higher protein mix. She will choose raw over the Meow Mix but I can't leave it in there because Spice will eat it as well, which will make him sick with a day or two.
The only solution I see at this point is to separate them into separate cages for the time being. Not something I really want to do because I think they're bonding well, but I don't see any other choice. At least until I can get the adults on raw, or at least on evo without bad side effects. The cages would be in the same room, but probably not next to each other.
My worry is that I'll never be able to get the adults on high protein diets. If I'm forced to keep feeding Meow Mix, I wouldn't be able to house the baby with them just to avoid her eating that crap.
Any thoughts? Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about this? During the day, I can watch and feed everyone separately, but that's not an option at night.
