Nature is so cruel... We have just recovered from the worst drought in history. There were entire towns with no water to drink, no water for anything. Now we have floods like you would not believe. QLD in the north east of Aus has 38 regions and 300,000 sq miles flooded, and once again some towns have little drinking water. There are about 1,000 people living in evacuation centers. Most home insurance does not cover the damage to the homes or Business that people have lost. I am writing this now with tears in my eyes for the people that have lost everything they own. Please say a prayer for these people and also for the hundreds of animals killed in this disaster. Just google Australia floods if you want to see more pictures, or go to www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/industry/mining/8230182/Australian-floods-send-coal-prices-soaring.htmlIt was not a very Happy New Year for these poor families.

Candles are lit. It seems that there are many who have felt Mother Nature's bite. Are you and yours ok? ciao

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. Yes we are safe, thank you. We live in Western Sydney, not usually prone to flooding, but never say never the way the strange weather has been.

I'm so glad you're safe. Weather patterns have been strange all over - not for the better. I was just in Florida where the unusually cold weather has resulted in the deaths of quite a few of the manatees, which are not all that common to begin with. We had terrible fires in our area of Colorado this year. And we've had some devastating floods in the Eastern US along with killer tornadoes in the mid-west as well. We feel your pain in Australia - the flooding is a terrible disaster. We send our thoughts and prayers to your country and those who are suffering. -jennifer

Thank you Jennifer, US disasters sound like Aus too. We have flooding in West Australia, fires in South Australia, floods in NSW & QLD on the east coast. We had a destructive tornado in June in Nth NSW, with 300km per hour winds, pretty much wiped out a town on the coast. Then we have our usual cyclones up north, that has caused most of this flooding rain now. A few years ago we had the deadly bush fires at Christmas time. It made me cry when I heard of a couple who put their children's Christmas presents in their car so they would be safe when they had to evacuate. The fire came thru so fast, it left the house alone, but it took the car. That just broke my heart. Another fire fighter was helping to save a families home, only to return to find his own home burned to the ground, his wife said there was a turkey baking in the oven too. Then there was Ash Wednesday fires, I am sure you all know of that one...We had help from USA fire fighters for that one.. Sad part is, it has only just begun, rivers are peaking at 16m, other rivers are still rising. Approx 200,000 people have been affected so far. This is a photo gallery with lots of photo's of several towns. www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/gallery/gallery-e6frewxi-1225980619164?page=1

wow...those pictures are amazing... I feel so badly for everyone that's been effected. The picture of the men turing off the electricity in the dingy made my heart lurch... I know how it is to have to live without power for an extended time.

Update! The death toll is now 10 people and hundreds of animals. There is approx $5 Billion damage. Over the past 10 days, flooded rivers flowed into 40 communities, touching 200,000 people, inundating 1200 homes and affecting a further 10,700. More than 4000 people have been evacuated. Rockhampton river has peaked at 9.25m. The town of 75,000 people is completely cut off now, the only way to get food, water & supplies in is with the Armies 3 black hawk helicopters. But flood water keeps running and there is a 14m wall of water heading to the next town, who are busy building levee banks up to 14.5m. And the next town, and the next state, there is disaster waiting to happen. Tomatoes, lettuce, zucchinis and potatoes have doubled in price as growers struggle to harvest and get crops to markets. Milk prices also are set to rise as isolated dairy farmers pour milk down the drain, while beef producers have yet to determine stock losses. Almost half the state's 1.5 million-tonne grain crop has also been destroyed. Not to mention the damage to Australia's coal export. The disaster relief fund established for flood-stricken Queenslanders has surpassed the $10.4 million mark, big Business' & small and even everyday people like me have donated. We also had a big clean out and sent lots of clothing, bedding & kitchen stuff to our local collection area, then collected and taken up by the helicopters. President Obama is ready to help, and NZ has sent aid also. Please give something to an appeal if you see it in your area, even a few dollars adds up. Remember these people have no homes left to go home to, only the clothes and a few personal things that they could put in a bag.

How sad!!!! Reminds me of hurricane Katrina, however I would guess the hurricane flooding would subside faster. More prayers for all those who have been affected and for those who are within the potential "danger zone" as well.
