I'll probably be staying up all night because I'm too worried about him to sleep. Good thing I have projects to complete for our New Year's Eve party tomorrow (well today at this point).

Could this possibly be an IBD flair with Spice? He was doing great until I started him on chicken soupie. Today I added a bit of turkey ground because I was a little low of soupie to everyone. He had diarrhea last night and the diarrhea he had this morning looked a lot like the pictures that hurricanekatt posted a while ago. But now it's become mostly watery.
I'm not really sure. I'm thinking it's better to be safe than sorry and head to the vet. *sigh*

When we realized Lucrezia likely had a blockage, I didn't pay any attention to how much of anything she was supposed to have. She got LOTS of pumpkin, LOTS of lax, and LOTS of vaseline. I figured the runs were easier to deal with than a life threatening blockage! And she did finally pass the foam she'd eaten After spending the night at the vet's

Just popped in to see how he was doing. Have you tried to get some pedialyte in him? Even some broth (the real thing not gravy mix) would probably work for him too. It's just a thought when trying to keep him hydrated. Good luck, we're thinking of you....Spice has his own healing candle set up now ciao

He's sleeping right now. I don't see any signs of distress. I would give him more lax but since he's had watery diarrhea for more than 24 hours, and I don't have pedialyte in the house, I don't want to dehydrate him any more that he already is. Can't wait for 8am to come.

4:30 and he finally pooped something solid (and slightly orange-y). He also ate heartily (kibble, but beggars can't be choosers) and drank water for a good 10 minutes while I watched him. After looking through it, I see a few hairs encased in hard bits. I think he had a hairball. I'm still going to give him some more lax this morning to make sure it's all out. Thank goodness. Just like a furbrat to keep me up all night then eat breakfast like nothing happened. *whew* I feel better now.

No more poop so far this morning. Called the vet who think he might be ok as laong as he's eating and drinking, but I'm still taking him in at 11 for a once over before they close for the weekend. I really really really want to avoid the ER vet.

Excellent idea. Good luck, we`re thinking about you. Don`t think for a moment that you`re the first one who has sat up watching over a deathly sick ferret only to have them get up in the morning and go about their business like nothing has happened. Hopefully, all has passed ciao

Well, we just got back from the vet. The vet thinks this may just be a bad reaction to trying to introduce raw, which has a ton more protein than the meow mix they're using to eating. He's still eating and drinking on his own so we're just going to watch him for now. He got subQ fluids and flagyl for in intestinal upset.
No obstruction as he went twice this morning, yay!
I didn't realize how tense I had been until I felt my body relax on the way home from the vet.
Thank you all for your support. It really means a lot to me.

I'm so glad that it appears just a tummy upset. What your vet says makes sense. I'm thinking back on a switch that I did a few years ago, Shazam and Houdini. They had been a rescue that I did that I was so angry, I could only walk out with the two ferrets before I started screaming at their people and blow the rescue. The two little ones had not had any food in a week, their people had run out of kibbles on the Monday (the bowl had been filled at that time according to the daughter). I picked those two furbabies up on the following Sunday. Their people figured I was going to pick them up on Sunday so they didn't want to spend any more money on the poor little souls. Their water bottle was green with scum and algae. The two little ones were so thin my son refused to pick them up because they felt like loose bones in a bag of skin. He was afraid of breaking them. The ferrets didn't even smell like ferrets. I bought them some high end kibbles to feed in interim until I could get them switched. The kibble made them horribly sick. They were so thin that they were able to break out of their isolation cage, they squeezed between the door and the bars (I've only had one little rescue girl who could do that before these 2 and they were boys so I figured I was safe). I was working in the kitchen when Shazam came bouncing by with a couple of the other brats....it was one of those double takes you do when you suddenly realize that's not your ferret . I figured what the hey, damage is done and left them to play with the rest of the brats (at that time I only had one play group and 15 ferrets) They started eating the same food (raw) as the rest of the furbrats. They had ghastly loose stools for a week or so but continued to eat their food without any other issues so I just let them. It all balanced out in the end. When they left for their new home you wouldn't have recognized the two fat little sods. Keep an eye on him and really push the fluids. Good luck ciao

Yeah, sounds exactly like Spice. In fact, when I introduced the high end ferret kibble he had a similar reaction, very seedy poop but there was no diarrhea so I wasn't terribly worried. This time though, I thought it was a whole lot of fluids coming out on a very tiny body.
The vet recommends I introduce raw a teaspoon a day and increase gradually from there. They are more than willing to eat the soupie, but I don't want to see another reaction like this, so that is definitely the plan. Pita is going to continue on soupie because she's doing very well. Poor thing had to subsist on kibble for the last day or so because I've been so busy with Spice and then preparing for this party we're having, I didn't have time to make more soupies.
Heather, I'm going to post some questions on how to incorporate turkey into the soupie in my mentor thread later.
Thanks
